www.exhibitionpark.ca HELPING MAKE ENERGY EASY FOR YOU

Alberta’s agriculture industry is foundational to the province’s strong, diversified economy. Agronomists agree that within the next few decades most countries in the world will consume more food than they produce and Canada will be unique in its ability to export surplus food. Alberta, obviously, plays a major role in Canada’s agricultural production.

At ATCO, we also know that farms are expensive to operate with its great demand for infrastructure, equipment and energy. We also hear from many customers that energy and the industry in general is confusing, and we understand. We want to help.

When you are thinking about energy solutions for your farm or business, we want you to feel confident you’re using the right energy option to meet your needs. Both electricity and natural gas have a role in delivering energy to you and in most cases, if you need light you use electricity; if you need heat, you use natural gas. However, we’re looking into technologies and advancements that may change your point of view on this. These advancements are reducing utility costs, increasing efficiencies and making a positive impact on our environment.

So first, let’s compare the costs of natural gas vs. electricity. If you converted natural gas (gigajoules) into the same measurement unit for electricity (kilowatt hours), you would learn that Albertan’s pay about 2 cents per kWh for the cost of natural gas delivered. This includes the cost of the commodity, carbon tax, franchise fees, GST, transmission and distribution charges. By contrast, electricity costs 10 cents per kWh and that’s just the price to move the electrons!

So how can you use more natural gas for your energy purposes?

Well…we’ve got a solution for you!

Micro Combined Heat and Power (mCHP) is an innovative high-efficiency energy solution that uses natural gas to generate both heat and electricity for your home or business by capturing the excess thermal energy that would normally be lost during power generation. The mCHP unit uses the excess thermal energy to heat your home or business, helping you to create greater efficiencies, lower your utility costs and reduce

greenhouse gas emissions. mCHP generates electricity exactly when and where you need it and can provide you with reliable, low-emitting energy production today and in the future.

While it’s still a new initiative for Canada, over the past two years we’ve installed mCHPs across Alberta, including a dairy farm in Taber. In our research, we found with the installation of a mCHP unit it can reduce approximately 4 tons of CO2 emissions and save up to $1,000 in utility costs per year*. Further, many of the install projects also combine mCHP with solar systems. By combining these technologies, we’re maximizing renewable energy and supplementing it with high-efficiency low- emissions gas technology, and ultimately reducing your energy costs will mean money back in your pocket.

Farmers can also take part in the government rebate program, Farm Energy and Agri-processing Program (FEAP), to help cover up to 50 per cent of the cost of energy efficient equipment upgrades or new installations, including mCHP. This Program is designed to encourage energy management which will result in cost savings, energy conservation, and ultimately, reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

The Program offers financial support of up to $250,000, subject to financial constraint, to applicants who incorporate high efficiency equipment that is identified in the applicable Funding List in their construction and/or retrofitting projects. For more information about this program, visit the government website https://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/general/progserv. nsf/All/pgmsrv462.

But don’t do this alone. Our team is here to support you from start to end. With sound technical expertise and over 100 years of industry knowledge, we will find the energy solution that’s right for you. At ATCO, we’re here to help make energy easy for you today, while cultivating a more sustainable tomorrow.
