News from High Suffolk Rotary

“FAIR fa' your honest, sonsie face!” (translation: “Good luck to you and your honest, plump face”). Robert Burns uses this line to give a warming start to his poem “Address to a Haggis”, and the Rotary Club of High Suffolk certainly had a warm- ing start to the year, with two Scottish-flavoured events. The annual Burns Night Supper featured a number of Haggis’s (Haggi?). President-to-be John was the genial host in another of his very successful Rotary Whisk(e)y Tasting events, held at Kingfishers Restaurant at Cretingham Golf Club. At the first meeting in February, the club handed over the pro- ceeds from the “Santa’s Sleigh” collection to two chosen chari- ties, and heard more about their work. Suffolk Family Carers provides support, information and ad-

vice to carers and their families across Suffolk. Their young people’s service team support young people aged 5-24 years who look after, or help care for, a family member who has a disability. Visit www.suffolk- familycarers.org/ or call 01473 835477. Mid Suffolk Holiday Oppor- tunity Play Scheme was es- tablished in 1978. It is a play scheme providing a range of specialist staffing, play equip- ment, activities and facilitiese for children and young people with disabilities. HOPS urgent- ly needs funds for a new home if it is to survive. Visit www. midsuffolkhops.org.uk/ or call 07857 618161. Like to hear more, or get in- volved? Craig Bacon visits Alde Valley Academy

ON Thursday 14th December, it was Alde Valley’s pleasure to welcome the talented musician, Craig Bacon to the Academy. The objective was to showcase Craig’s talent and to encourage students to enrol in drumming lessons with Craig. Craig has been playing the

drums now for 30 years; he used to practice for 4/5 hours a day and decided to take it upon himself to teach students the fun and exciting instrument. Craig attracted many students into the hall as he performed several well-known songs on the drums. The pupils took a liking to his talent so much that over 20 students applied for drumming lessons

with Craig which will be taking place very shortly. He also welcomed 3 students onto the stage who already receive lessons outside of school to perform in front of their peers. Last term Alde Valley started

extra tuition of guitar, bass and vocal lessons with the very talented Anthony Macandrew. This term they are, hopefully, bringing in Percussion lessons (drums with a samba club at lunchtime) and strings (with a string ensemble also at lunchtime). Mr Evans – Music Teacher

told us that Craig Bacon has now started with seven students on a Tuesday and the numbers are growing!”

Aldeburgh Cafe

MEL Davenport is now well in to her fifth year at Aldeburgh Café. A Suffolk girl born and bred, Mel owned a catering business in the bright lights of London for 20 years. But the lure of returning to this peaceful corner of the country proved too great and she returned to Suffolk around 15 years ago before taking over at the Café in October 2014. Mel describes the business as

a café with a twist. Open seven days a week between 9am – 4pm, visitors will find their favourite café classics here whether they are stopping for breakfast, lunch or just a quick snack. The Aldeburgh Café Breakfast is the classic ‘full English’, or perhaps you prefer smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, or a delicious vegetarian breakfast. If you prefer something lighter then why not go for pancakes, porridge, filled baguettes or baps. The lunch menu includes a selection of open sandwiches, all-day brunch style dishes or anything from the weekly specials board. This will usually have a theme, such as ‘pie week’, which is always popular and as with everything else on the menu, the specials are all home- cooked. The café is licensed so diners can also enjoy a glass of wine or a bottle of beer or cider with their lunch. Naturally, being located along

the glorious Suffolk Heritage Coast, the café welcomes lots of walkers, bird watchers and cyclists. There is also good news for our furry friends as Aldeburgh Café is dog-friendly so having spent the morning tearing around

the beach or heath they too are welcome to come in and have a snooze whilst their humans re-fuel! There is a lovely community

feel here with lots of regular customers creating a friendly and welcoming environment. There is year-round outside seating which doubles the capacity and Mel is looking to expand the outside area this year. Naturally, through the colder months customers chose to remain indoors, but come spring and summer, the views across the marsh are stunning and people begin to eat al- fresco. With so much experience

and a passion for producing delicious, homecooked food, it makes sense the Mel also offers her services for outside catering. The team will cater for any event or occasion and the process if very much client-led. The menu will be completely bespoke, simply pop in and speak with one of the team about budget,

tastes, dietary requirements and numbers and they will create a menu specifically for your needs. The café caters for all dietary requirements and there are always vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options on the menu. If you are unsure of what you can eat, please ask one of the team and they will be happy to help.

The Aldeburgh Café is a nice

place to be. There is local art on the wall, fresh flowers on the table and always a happy team of staff on hand to offer a warm welcome. There is plenty of free parking on site so you really can’t ask for more! Next time you are in Aldeburgh for a family day out, walk along the beach or a bit of retail therapy, be sure to pop in here to take a break and re-charge your batteries.
