The GPA held a grand opening for the Appalachian Regional Port Aug. 22 just north of Chatsworth, Ga., on a 42-acre site in Murray County. According to reports, the Trump Administration rejected an offer by two Chinese vice-ministers to travel to the US the week of January 21 for preparatory trade talks because of a lack of progress on two important issues, highlighting the difficulty that Washington and Beijing will face in trying to reach agreement by a deadline of March 1.

Reports state that US officials are debating ratcheting back tariffs on Chinese imports to calm markets and give Beijing an incentive to make deeper concessions in a trade battle that has rattled global economies.

Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) recently received a commitment from the office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) that it will establish an exclusion process for US importers from future Section 301 tariff increases on Chinese goods.

U.S. Senators Doug Jones (D-Ala.) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) re-introduced their Automotive Jobs Act legislation, which would delay President Trump’s proposed 25-percent tariff on imported cars, trucks, and auto parts.

In May 2018, the President directed the US Commerce Department to initiate a Section 232 investigation to determine whether imported automobiles, trucks, and parts are a threat to US national security and to subsequently levy tariffs. The Commerce Department is expected to finish its investigation and make its recommendation to the President in February. The Jones-Alexander legislation would require the International Trade Commission (ITC) to conduct a comprehensive study of the well- being, health, and vitality of the United States automotive industry before tariffs could be applied.

The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) requested consultations with Peru under the Environment Chapter of the United States – Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA). “By taking this unprecedented step, the Trump Administration is making clear that it takes monitoring and enforcement of US trade agreements seriously, including obligations to strengthen forest sector governance,” said Ambassador Robert Lighthizer.

EU, Japan, and US trade ministers advanced discussions on their shared objective to address non-market-oriented policies and practices of third countries that lead to severe overcapacity, create unfair competitive conditions for their workers and businesses, hinder the development and use of innovative technologies, and undermine the proper functioning of international trade, including where existing rules are not effective.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) - took effect on Dec. 30 whereby 6 of 11-member countries have ratified it, including Canada, Japan and Australia. Canadian exporters say the prize is reduced Japanese tariffs for beef, pork, wheat and canola oil as Japan is the world’s third-largest beef importer and seventh-largest wheat buyer.

On January 11, Reuters reported that the US signaled that it would not bow to the EU’s request to keep agriculture out of planned US-EU trade talks, publishing negotiating objectives that seek comprehensive EU access for American farm products.
