Cricket clubworking to recover top form
MAIDSTONE’S top cricket club, TheMote, is working on a quick recovery after a shock when its top three Saturday league teams were relegated last season. This has already resulted in the
selection of three new captains, a newcoach, a talented overseas all- rounder, and a player recruitment drive. The club has a proud Kent
League record, with several cham- pionships. Recently, the 1st XI twice fell just short of regaining premier division status, but last season stalled seriously, with rele- gation toDivision 2. “The target nowis an immediate
promotion back to Division One,” saidchairman andopening bowler GlenAukett. New first team captain is top
order batsman James Marriott, who returns aftermissing last sea- son with a knee injury and will look to addto the 5,000 runs he has scoredfor the club.Other newcap-

ful left-arm spinner and middle- order batsman Matt Luksich (22). He is a premier league player in KwaZulu,Natal, and a coach. Senior club coachwill be former
playerDavid Josephwho has been workingwithKentCountyCricket Club, heading the juniors. Hewill workwith the 1st XI on Saturdays but have an overall view of the playing side to ensure it reaches full potential. This kicks offwithwinter nets at
Cornwallis Academy on Sunday, January 27 (10am-noon) and runs to March 31, when outdoor nets start at theWillowWay ground. The recruitment drive is backed
by aMaidstone mailing for senior players for four Saturday teams, Sunday and mid-week cricket (
Marriott-james@sky.com) and for the successful 150-strong colts sec- tion (
nickaldrich@gmail.com). “With a successfulnewgrounds-
man HowardWaters, the wickets are now rated among the best in the Kent League,” saidMrAukett. “The club is sounder than it has
been for verymany years – andwe must now ensure this is reflected with playing success aswell.”
