Happy New Year! Since baby Harry arrived back in September Adam and I haven't been out for dinner quite as much as we used to. Don't worry though, we've still got plenty of places up our sleeves to tickle your taste buds. This month we're throwing back to the last meal we enjoyed before Harry joined us, in The Conservatory at the beautiful Calcot Manor, near Tetbury.
Calcot has an incredible cocktail menu and I was seriously envious that Adam could enjoy these - I shouldn't have worried though as I was more than catered for in my pregnant state with a delicious mocktail menu too. Adam thoroughly enjoyed a tonka bean Manhattan with hints of vanilla, caramel, nuts, cherries and spice. Interesting side note: you couldn’t drink this Manhattan in Manhattan as America has banned tonka beans. Apparently if you consume a ridiculous quantity, they are mildly toxic. All the more deliciousness for us!
Our starters were little bowls of beauty, with Adam declaring his confit Cotswold White chicken ravioli the best thing he'd tasted in a long time. It sat on a silky white onion velouté and topped with salty, crisp pancetta. It was only a starter but he could happily have eaten it again for his main, and maybe even for dessert. My asparagus and heritage tomato risotto was light, fresh and bursting with colours and flavour in every mouthful.
My main of macaroni cheese with crispy leeks was a delicate dish and beautifully plated. A big bowl of dirty mac ‘n’ cheese is one of my favourite indulgences so this made for a more refined and
elegant option. The sauce was silky smooth and the charred leeks added a nice textural element, something which I’m definitely going to try at home.
Adam chose cod and cockles with a chilli and sweetcorn consommé, samphire and slivers of radish. Although Calcot is rather a long way from the sea, the salty aromas evoked memories of a Cornish seaside holiday earlier in the year and went down a treat. You obviously can’t have fish without chips so Adam ordered a side of crisp, triple cooked slabs to keep him going and they were pretty much all you could ask for.
Already full, we rounded off our meal with delicate summery desserts. A wobbly panna cotta with white chocolate sorbet was particularly nice and left us wanting more. Calcot served up a great meal and the service was impeccable - we’ll definitely be heading back soon!
