THE CHANGING FACE OF SIXTH FORM EDUCATION

Hereford Sixth Form College prides itself on having the widest choice of A Level subjects available to students throughout the region but, in addition to academic A Levels, the College offers a range of vocational qualifications which are highly valued by universities, employers and apprenticeships. Many of these are equivalent to A Levels and can be studied in any combination of A Levels and vocational subjects.

The College regularly researches trends in the popularity of subjects, university courses and the job market to ensure its students get the best chance of getting into their chosen career.

Two of the recently introduced vocational courses are the BTEC National Extended Certificate in Computer Games Development & Cyber Security and the Diploma in Criminology (both equivalent to one A Level). Interest in both courses exceeded all expectations and the courses are already proving successful.

Abigail Lewis completed a Diploma in Criminology, A Level Psychology and A Level Travel & Tourism in the summer and said, “I’ve

been accepted into Lincoln University, so I will be going to study Forensic Psychology. It was the Criminology course itself that gave me the leap up because they really weren’t expecting it at university. It put me into an ‘unconditional’ offer instead of just ‘conditional’.”

Principal, Peter Cooper, said, “I am delighted with the excellent results within our new and exciting range of vocational and technical qualifications. The government’s industrial strategy makes clear that we need to address the skills shortage and skills gap in the UK and our range of subjects ensures there is a wide range of subjects to mix and match with each other or in combination with A Levels. Problem solving, research and communication are to the fore in these qualifications ensuring that students have the skills demanded by HE and employers in professional careers.”

With excellent results, a huge range of enrichment activities alongside outstanding support and guidance, it’s never been easier to study at one of the best sixth form colleges in the country. If you’re interested in finding out more pop along to the next Open Event on Saturday, 9th February 2019 between 9.30am – 12.30pm.
