Incentivising achievement
Employability benefits are a big incentive for participants to see their programmes through to the end. Throughout 2017/18 we raised awareness of the skills and attributes a young person gains through their DofE and how these translate to the workplace.
We have identified a positive opportunity to support older students and apprentices to develop their work and life skills through the DofE by improving our reach into further education and apprenticeships.
Mia attends Southfield School in Northampton and successfully raised £1395 for Diabetes UK by organising an event with a disco, quiz, games and a buffet.
Mia solely organised the event and sold over 150 tickets. When Mia asked for donations for a raffle from the local community she was sent over 100 prizes, including two signed balls, executive box tickets and other merchandise from Leicester Tigers RFC.
Mia chose the charity as her mum suffers from diabetes, it is a cause she is passionate about.
There is a significant element of our age range that we believe we can serve better. We have some excellent examples of colleges and apprenticeship programmes using the DofE to great effect and we plan to expand on this in the coming year.
There will be further education pilot programmes in each UK Country and Region that will help us to explore the barriers and opportunities to greater involvement in that sector. We will work with our corporate partners to expand the use of DofE within apprenticeships.
We saw a huge increase in the engagement of people to our social media posts, in which we promoted all aspects of the DofE, but focussing at times on the value of a DofE Award to a young person’s employability.
Our employability evidence base was especially popular, with over 100 UK employers endorsing the DofE as a great way for young people to gain the skills they want in their business. Visit
DofEskills.org to see the endorsements.
Anna is a 21-year-old Bronze and Silver DofE Award holder, she has learning difficulties and autism. Using the skills and confidence Anna gained from her DofE, she showed initiative and was able to work without assistance whilst attending work experience through Derwen College. Steve Evans, DofE Co-ordinator, says “Everything Anna has worked on as part of her DofE further complemented her work and life skills”. When Anna left college her confidence grew, enabling her to seek employment independently. Anna has since secured a job in a local supermarket. Anna said “My DofE gave me the confidence to go to the interview”.
