Ministry Guide:
Caring Shelf Fifth in a series of ministries that can help you live God’s love
BY NANCY HOFFMAN
The Caring Shelf ministry is run by the deacons and provides ready-made meals for those in need. When a baby is born, someone is sick, or a family is having a difficult time, our pastors will bring them a meal when they visit.
Casseroles, pasta, soups, and chili are among the items made by deacons and members of the congregation. Assisting with this ministry is relatively simple, especially if you like to cook. You can even double a recipe you are making for your family and place the extra in a container for the shelf.
Tere are just a few steps you need to follow once you bring the meal to church. Before you place the meal in the freezer, a recipe card needs to be completed that lists the ingredients for those with food allergies or on restricted diets. Recipe cards can be taped to the outside of the meal or placed in a sealable plastic bag with the meal. Te meal also needs to be logged on the list. Both the list and recipe cards are available in a folder attached to the church’s freezer, which is located in the supply closet within the kitchen.
Tere are times when the freezer empties quickly and we are in desperate need of meals. Deacon Walt Eberts monitors the Caring Shelf and is responsible for keeping the freezer stocked.
