Mystery as signs go up in car park
IT IS a popular village car park used by shoppers, patients and pub regulars, but mystery sur- rounds the identity of its owner. Bearsted’sYeomanLane carpark
came under the spotlight two months ago, when six mature, healthy trees were cut down, sparking local anger. To ascertainwho hadsanctioned
the felling, borough councillor Denis Spooner contacted Maid- stone Borough Council’s property services team. He told Bearsted Parish Council:
“They were unable to confirm whetherMBCownedthe carpark.” The mystery deepened weeks
later when signs purporting to be from the borough council ap- peared, warning of a three-hour limit and saying that motorists parked at their own risk. They were not in council style and had been put up using just cable ties. Cllr Spooner approached the bor- ough’s parking services team.
“They told me that the car park
was the borough’s,” he said. “They’ve been enforcing restric- tions. They had erected the signs, and they’ve even been ticketing.” The busy car park, which fronts
the A20 Ashford Road, serves the doctor’s surgery, Yeoman pub and shopping parade. The borough’s parking services team, councillors reason, must be confident of their position as ticketing on someone else’s landwouldbe risky. But they are perplexed by the property team’s reluctance to reply to Cllr Spooner’s enquiries. Parish councillor Richard Ash
said: “It seems that one section of the borough council has got it wrong and that parking services has got it right. I think the car park belongs toMBC.” Downs Mail contacted MBC
over a week before going to press about the extent of the authority’s involvement with the site. An an- swer has not be forthcoming.
