Ryan Crouch – Team GB visits Alde Valley Academy


ALdE Valley welcomed, on October 19th 2018 the committed and inspiring GB Paralympic swimmer Ryan Crouch to share his career and healthy lifestyle to all of the students. At Alde Valley Academy,


mental and physical health is extremely important and they take it very seriously. They believe that keeping active and healthy will help maintain a clear and positive mind set during the student’s school years. Ryan successfully engaged


the pupils through an honest questioning and answering session which was based upon the video footage of his qualification to the Paralympic 50 metre free style final in Rio 2016. He spoke of the nerves, the expectation and how he dealt with his challenges in front of 18,000 spectators. Local boy Ryan has mild cerebral palsy which restricts his strength in one leg. However, he told the students that he does not let this affect him or his passion towards swimming and keeping fit. He


also said how he considered giving up following illness but love of the sport and being part of a team kept him going; this resilience mindset is part of his message to our students. “Be the best you can be and never give up.” Ryan and Mrs Mayhew,


Head of Physical Education, then took the students out onto their running field where all participants became determined to better their personal times and show off their abilities. Ryan felt humble as students took an interest in his life and discussed with him whether they had a dream they’d also like to pursue. Students were then asked to


raise money for their 10 minute run; unexpectedly they raised a ground breaking total of £2421.40! Half of these funds will go to the Alde Valley PE department and the other half will be sent to Inspired Sports. Students commented; “Ryan


being here really did make a difference to the effort I put in during running. I feel inspired by him,” “I loved the race,” “I would definitely like to do


it again,” “It was great to hear Ryan’s story,” “It was really great to meet a Paralympian.” Ryan said; “These students


are a real credit to the school. They were extremely well behaved.” Mrs Mayhew, Head of


Physical Education said; “It was our pleasure and delight to have had Ryan Crouch visit us and we believe it has made a dramatic difference in the pupils’ outlook towards their futures.”
