SAXMUNDHAM & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
RICHARd Crisp began with a
tribute to founder member Helen Revell, who has passed away age 90. Helen devoted her time to being Town Recorder, trustee of Saxmundham Museum and many other organisations. Helen and her late husband Jack were always involved with the community and both were teachers in the town. At our November meeting
we welcomed david Empson to speak to us about “Grandparents in the Great War.” david brought a fraction of his collection of medals and memorabilia, filling two trestle tables. He also had some large poster boards showing photographs and details of brave men from Ipswich who fought in the war. david’s collection has taken forty years to amass.

The medals are in frames and
as david picked them up, he told us the story behind the person the awards had belonged to and also filled us in, in depth, on the history in Europe at the time. After the Battle of Waterloo was the first time a medal was given to everyone who took part. Medals and a variety of items were passed round, including khaki armbands which were worn by persons not in uniform who were engaged in other activities such as farmers, business owners, but later on they may have been called up. This prevented you from receiving a white feather if you were not in uniform. Special badges were given to those who were invalided out, to wear if they did not have an obvious injury.

National Mental Health Day at Alde Valley Academy
ON October 10th every year comes a time of great change in the world of mental health, with more people coming forward and openly discussing the once- shunned illnesses that affects so many of us. This year’s theme for World Mental Health day is young people and mental health in a changing world. The early years of adulthood
are a time of life when many changes occur. For example; changing schools, exams, college, starting university or even finding a new job. For many, these can be exciting times. They can also be times of stress. In some cases these overwhelming feelings can lead to a mental illness. Some mental illnesses can occur at a young age; fortunately there is a growing recognition of the importance of helping young people build mental resilience, from the earliest stages, in order to cope with the challenges they may face in today’s world. Alde Valley Academy takes
the wellbeing of students very seriously. They have dedicated Learning Support Managers who have strong links with professional
organisations
which can offer specialist help and assistance. On October 9th Mrs Mayhew-
Head of Physical Education, invited the company ‘One Life Suffolk’ in to Alde Valley Academy to meet with their enthusiastic Year 8 students to develop their understanding of mental health. It was a delight for Alde Valley to welcome Helen Rose-Clark who is part of the One Life team who has helped many local peoples lives become healthier and happier. Helen successfully engaged

the class by discussing the sources of mental health problems; she gave real life scenarios, examples of the different types of mental illnesses, possible causes and who the students can speak to for any support on mental health. To further the students understanding they worked in groups to make posters on what they thought may cause mental health problems and also what they think they could do to prevent it. One student commented “I now know what help is available”, another student added “This has definitely opened up my understanding on mental health”. Mrs Mayhew said “Working together with students and parents we can try to tackle mental health together”.
