LIVE 24-SEVEN BURCOT GR ANGE CINNAMON CA R E COL L ECT ION

Lisa Tooker, Deputy Manager at Burcot Grange, part of the Cinnamon Care Collection. Worked within healthcare for 25 years. Lisa discusses the key areas to consider when selecting short or long term residential or dementia care.

What should you look for when choosing a care home for a loved one?

P38

IWhen people are looking for a care home for someone is it important that they sit down with the person who will be staying at the home if they're able to have such a conversation and discuss with them what is important to them. Location is very important to some people who wish to keep the connections with friends, family and outside interests. Facilities that the home can offer, or specific healthcare requirements that need to be met - such as contact with district nurses and hospitals, might be important to some people. When looking at a potential home, you should be able to visit at any time without an appointment to experience what the home looks and feels like. The environment should be clean, friendly, have a feeling of a home and interaction between the team and the people living at the home should be natural and caring. Our home here at Burcot Grange offers luxury residential care and lifestyle choice in a beautiful Tudor style building surrounded by beautifully kept grounds. Our sister home, Burcot Lodge which sits in the same beautiful grounds is a purpose-built residential home that provides care for those living with dementia. It's also important that you read the CQC report which will give you the necessary information about the care that is delivered in the home that you are visiting. Looking at carehome.co.uk is also strongly advised as it gives you reviews from families and visitors to the homes.

When is the ‘right’ time to consider care?

IThe time to consider choosing a care home will be different for everyone, it may be that your loved one is finding it increasingly difficult to live alone, it could be that the spouse is struggling or following hospital admissions after a fall or surgery. Hospital assessments can also suggest that the best place for an individual is a care home. People need care at different stages

and here at Burcot Grange and the Lodge we can offer respite and longer terms stays depending on people’s circumstances and care needs.
