When tragedy brings us together

Initially, I thought about using my new habit of riding the bus as the foundational theme of this article; after all, this past year I’ve saved myself money while feeling virtuous over sparing the environment. Then came the news. That news. The news from Humboldt. Suddenly riding that bus became synonymous with tragedy. Following the news, my

emotions were raw. Turning to the dictionary, I found several illustrations to define “community.” First: a group of people living in the same place or having something particular in common. I’ve never lived in a community where hockey didn’t play a huge part in its recreational and social structure. Another definition revolves around a group of people living together in one place or in practicing common ownership. Although the resource I researched used the example of “a community of nuns,” I mentally added “a community of hockey fans” to the list. I then read and nodded my head in agreement with this statement: community refers to a particular area or place and a feeling of fellowship with others, resulting from shared attitudes, interests and goals. Let’s face it – hockey is all about sharing ambitions and scoring goals. Since the evening of April 6, much has been written and
expressed in words both articulate and heart-rending but because so many of my personal friends are passionate both about hockey and farming, I wanted to add my voice. So, I returned to my bus-riding musings: Although my initial
reasons for applying for a seniors’ transit card included reducing the number of miles I put on my car and the gallons of gas I deposit in its tank, it’s also proven to be one of the more pleasant choices I’ve made in the past several years. For example, on a recent trip to town I overheard a conversation between two passengers regarding what they feel is a total lack of responsibility demonstrated by so many young people. My thoughts turned to a whole lot of teens and youth who are powerful models of personal responsibility, community involvement and forward thinking. In our small town, “please,” “thanks” and polite greetings are common-place. Other “a-bit-older-young-people” also are doing great things
for our community. In addition to working together with middle-agers and seniors in non-profit and volunteer work, a number of under-50s have taken up farming. There’s a passionate desire to make our community as agriculturally self- sustaining as humanly possible. We’re not unique, though. Big or small, rural or urban, you can visit almost any Canadian city or town and discover both hockey zeal and agricultural commitment. They’re often planted together. I salute you, farmers, friends and hockey clubs (rivals or not)!
