MAY 2018 • COUNTRY LIFE IN BC Holstein auction sets new sale benchmark

Gavel drops at $120,000

by DAVID SCHMIDT ABBOTSFORD – With

today’s elite dairy cows valued at tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, it is common for them to have multiple owners, as owners seek to mitigate the risks and/or share in the rewards. But what do you do when one partner wants out and the other does not? For Westcoast Holsteins of Chilliwack, the answer was simple. When Quebequa Holsteins wanted to sell their half of Morsan Doorman Missy, a VG-88 two-year-old with a deep genetic and show pedigree and a potentially deeper future, they made Missy the feature of their Westcoast Classic Holstein Sale in Abbotsford, March 21. Missy did not disappoint, topping the now-annual sale with a full sale value of $120,000. Since Westcoast was only selling Quebequa’s half-interest, the successful bidders actually paid only $60,000. As is also becoming typical in these sales, the purchasers were themselves a

partnership, led by the Crosbie family of Benbie Holsteins in Saskatchewan. It did not take Missy long

to prove her value. In the BC Holstein Spring Show the following day, Missy placed first among 24 cows in the senior two-year-old class. Missy was not the only animal to top the $100,000 mark. Aardema Sugar Moon, a

November calf with a huge genomic rating, was close behind, earning a final bid of $115,000. Displaying the international nature of these elite sales, Sugar Moon was consigned by Double A Dairy of Idaho. The two sales set new benchmarks for a public auction in BC as the prices for both Missy and Sugar Moon
