32 Big prize money

draws big entries Holstein show attracts show strings from California, Prairies

by DAVID SCHMIDT

ABBOTSFORD – With $120,000 in prize money, the BC Holstein Spring Show has become one of the richest Holstein shows in North America. With that much prize money, it was no surprise that the March 22 show in Abbotsford was also one of the largest on the continent, with exhibitors from across Western Canada and as far away as California, parading 97 heifers and 94 cows before judge Mike Berry of Oregon and associate judge Pete Hartzell of Washington.

Owners of the faraway

showstrings did not leave empty-handed, with Samantha Gambonini and Stephen and Patrick Maddox of California, Robella Holsteins of Saskatchewan and Mosnang Holsteins of Alberta all returning home with championship ribbons and pocketsful of cash. That is not to say BC was

not well-represented. BC’s top two showstrings, Westcoast Holsteins and T&L Cattle, who normally travel thousands of kilometres to collect their show ribbons, only had to drive half an hour from Chilliwack to Abbotsford to share in the spoils.

The BC Holstein Branch

recognized the contribution Tom and Laurie DeGroot of T&L have made for the local dairy industry by dedicating the show to them. The branch lauded Tom’s passion for “great show cattle” and for helping other breeders “achieve their goals through the years.” “It’s not surprising that

many internationally known cattle have once called T&L home,” the branch stated. And top cattle continue to

call T&L Cattle home. That includes three-year-old Crestomere Unix Lindor, selected as the show’s reserve intermediate champion. DeGroot was outdone at

the grand and senior championship with Robella Sanchez Marabella, a four- year-old cow they co-own with Robella Holsteins. Westcoast also earned the junior championship with Milksource Gldndrm Asset and the senior red-and-white championship with Ms Apples Aleda-Red. Top show cattle are often

part of top show cow families with individual members of those families found in top show herds around the world. Aleda is a perfect example. Her mother, KHW Regiment

Apple-Red, is a former grand champion of the International Grand Red and White Show. Standing beside Aleda at the top of the five-year-old class and as reserve red and white champion of the show was her maternal sister, Miss Apple Aria, owned by Stephen and Patrick Maddox and Tyler Dickerhoof of California. Earning the reserve senior

and reserve grand championships was Gamlake Destry Sallie, a mature cow shown by Samantha Gambonini of Gamlake Dairy in California. Earning the

reserve junior championship was Hamming Solomon Danica, shown by Hamming Holsteins of Vernon. To show the depth of

quality at the show, the winning entries in both the junior group of three and senior breeder’s herd categories came from herds without a championship ribbon. Stanhope-Wedgwood of Cobble Hill topped seven other groups to win the junior group of three class while Wendon Holsteins of Alberta placed first among the five breeder’s herds.
