THE BEST NEW MUSIC COMING STRAIGHT OUTTA NORWICH brought to you by

AUDIOLINE Shadowboxer Photo: Chloe Brehaut

Shadowboxer have just released their new EP. A cause for celebration? Well, not quite.

SO HANG ON – WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? Certainly we’ve loved playing tracks from The Wolf, The Waves on BBC Introducing and in our eyes it’s a damn fine piece of work. We’d hardly be writing about them and their music if we didn’t think it was. But the band themselves, making lyrical rock with punk overlays, see things a little differently.

We need to go back a bit. The group started with the remains of another band who picked up new members along the way. And that’s the issue. It takes time to get to where you want to be – and in Shadowboxer’s eyes the new EP is more of a marker as to what they’ve accomplished in the few months they’ve been together than what they believe their future to be.

WHO ARE THEY? Let’s introduce. We haveNick Mason

on vocals and guitar. Joe Maguire also vocals, guitar. Luke Topliss on bass and Jack Mansfield with drums and backing vocals. There’s a name there from another Norwich band with a pretty formidable pedigree. Joe is also guitarist with Marigolds. The one thing they decided from day one though was Clean Slate. Try ideas and see what happened. All of them bring something to the band. Joe just ‘Breathed life’ into it with his guitar playing said Nick, whose own contribution are the distinct front vocals. “I can only keep in tune if I push my voice, that’s why I sound like I do!” he told us.

SO, WHERE ARE THEY HEADING? Here’s another thing. This band is not setting out for fame and fortune. They like the idea of being part of an underground scene, playing and developing the way they want rather than feeling pressured to conform to a particular sound or genre. It’s not that they don’t care, it’s not that The Wolf, The Waves is throwaway, more it’s a turning point they’re proud to own but looking to move on from. And that’s as exciting for us as for them to know we’re on a new journey.

34 / DEC 2018-JAN 2019 / OUTLINEONLINE.CO.UK

The band recently met up to start writing more material. “It’s the first whole session of doing this together,” said Nick, “Until now we’ve been adding to each other’s work. I think the new songs may be a little soſter than on the EP.”

THE FUTURE If the tracks go well there could be more releases in 2019 but nothing’s being hurried here. Gig-wise, “There could be one more before the end of the year,” Nick told us, “but the next one we’re putting on ourselves in a few months’ time. It’s at The Waterfront with Telling Truths, Blood Like Honey and Idolising Nova, under our own promotions name, Meltdown Live.”

Just a little footnote to our feature on getting to know the wonderful Shadowboxer. They may be looking forwards, but we can spend the time waiting for their new songs listening to a mighty fine EP just out and definitely worth discovering and sharing.
