TOM ODELL JUBILEE ROAD

Kieran Raza

Tom Odell, nation’s favourite piano ballad singer-songwriter is back with his third album. Over the years he has craſted a distinctive sound and you very much know what you’re getting with him. “Jubilee Road” is no different. However, that’s not to suggest that it’s tired or overdone. Tom has managed to craſt a record loaded with emotive and cinematic tunes with an enigmatic, classic atmosphere running throughout. The opening number “Jubilee Road”

illustrates a vibrant and charming scene that feels as if it is liſted from a Richard Curtis romantic comedy. He is a true story-teller in his writing, painting vivid imagery and symbolism. There’s something so enchanting about Tom’s mellow vocals. Lead single “If You Wanna Love Somebody”

feels like a warm hug in musical form. Tom sticks to raw instrumentals and soulful belted vocals. Jaunty number “China Dolls” adds a certain pizazz, with a funky melody and explosive chorus combining clambering pianos, twanging guitars and a bluesy sax. “Jubilee Road” is a cohesive record of a

timeless nature. It has the signature piano numbers we know and love from Tom, with an added theatrical extravagance. This record bears heart, soul, and dynamic storytelling that captivates listeners from start to finish.

SUNSCREEM OUT OF THE WOODS

Steve P

Where have they been during the past 20 years? Well as it turns out they haven’t really ever been away! The new album, it would appear at least in part been sitting around on the shelves gathering dust just waiting to get released. Hailing from Chelmsford, alongside their

mates The Prodigy, they were very much leaders and innovators of the then club and rave scene. During their career they have had twelve top forty hits in the UK and one top forty hit Stateside. Catch instantly grabs your attention, it has previously hit the top of the dance charts in the UK and was also a number two hit in the USA. Change, Where Are The Angels, Cover Me

and Goodtimes each carry their classic floor filling trademarks. There are two cover versions, the Psychedelic Furs track Heaven and also The Passions, I’m In Love With A German Film Star and it’s the latter than shines brightest, it really does work. All Fall Down a real dramatic affair that’s

played out over three minutes and thirty seven seconds to a backdrop of Lucia Holm’s sumptuous vocals and Paul Carnell’s dramatic piano playing. It very much sounds like Sunscreem are

back and if you like your dance music, you will not be disappointed. It’s great to have them back.

ALDEN PATTERSON & DASHWOOD BY THE NIGHT

Richard Shashamane

Anyone who has seen them perform live will testify, AP&D are a very tight musical trio who obviously have a close bond as friends, evidenced by their outstanding sets at FolkEast recently where they received a prolonged standing ovation from every one of the 500+ people lucky enough to be present for their Moot Hall set. This chemistry is carried over into the recordings where Alex's fiddle, Noel's dobro, and Christina's guitar and vocals are all clear, expressive and flawless whilst the backing vocals are rich with warm harmonies spot-on throughout. It opens with The Time Song, which is

followed by the title track and one of the album highlights. Bonnie Blue Eyes is their loving interpretation of a traditional American folk song with probable Scottish origins. Red Rocking Chair features an a cappella opening, showing off their vocals and harmonies in fine style before its instrumental close. The Cobbler's Daughter is an extremely

moving and sensitively composed piece based upon a couple who vanished in the Alps in 1942 and their daughter's subsequent, relentless search for them, finally locating their bodies in 2017 when she was aged 79. By the Night is a wonderful album, there's

a quiet confidence at work and a clear vision of how they want to sound and be heard. Gorgeous production by Alex and is also beautifully and lovingly packaged physically, with the Christina-designed artwork hand- printed to form the cover and inner sleeve.
