Child injured at fireworkdisplay


A CHILD suffered minor injuries caused by flying debris at a fire- works display inMaidstone. First aid services rushed to treat


the young boy and amanwhowere hurt at Kent Life’s fireworks spec- tacular on Saturday, November 3, which was attended by more than 3,000 people. Organisers acted quickly and


stopped the show due to safety ad- vice showing a change in the wind direction. A statement from Kent Life, in


Sandling, said: “We were disap- pointed to have to finish the display three minutes before the end. “Our fireworks company, Phoenix Fire- works, set up the display in accor- dance with the risk assessment and plans. They took the wind reports for the day resulting in the predic- tion supplied to the team. “Whilst setting upthe show, there


were no indications that the wind would be different to that planned. “The teamadvised that theywere


happy with the conditions during the day, and that the wind was fol-


lowing the prediction. “When the show was fired, it


would appear that the wind was changing. Thiswas happening dur- ing the show and reached a point where the display had to be cur- tailed for safety concerns. “It is understoodthat somedebris


landedin andaroundthe crowd, for whichwe sincerely apologise, as the intention is to entertain and not to causediscomfort to anyone. First aid supportwas provided byKCMed- ical Event Services who confirmed that any first aids attended to were minor.”  LEEDS Castle launched a de-

was shut down after one of the cups fell from its revolving plat- form. A castle statement said the three people involved did not sus- tain“significant” injuries andwere treated by in-house paramedics. The event attrtacted 17,000 visi-


tors.

AUDREYHughes (pictured) is among dozens of volunteers fromacross the town who have produced a staggering 8,000 Remembrance poppies to mark 100 years of the Armistice inMaidstone. The 84-year-old, from Titchfield


Close, Senacre, contributed over 1,000 flowers in fivemonths for the community exhibit, at Maidstone Museumuntil December 21. The tribute was produced by resi-


dents at knitting workshops in and around Maidstone, with the aim of producing 5,000 poppies – a target that was exceeded. The display was unveiled by the


Mayor ofMaidstone, David Naghi. Audrey said: “My grandad and


brother-in-law both fought inWWI, so this project has meant a lot to me.” The 5,000 Poppy Project began in


Australia in 2013 and has become an international tribute.

• To staff the hospital shop which is stocked with a wide variety of sandwiches, crisps, drinks, toiletries, greetings cards, sweets, chocolate, etc.


• To take trolleys (containing sweets, drinks, toiletries, etc.) round the wards. • Staff our busy tea bar • Sell books in the book room


The League of Friends is a registered charity and all monies raised ensures that it can respond to requests for equipment and improvements in the hospital.
