Spending boosted by hot summer

With the long days of sunshine now a distant memory, a recent report reveals that the unusually good weather this year encouraged many more consumers to put their hands in their pockets. The prolonged heatwave

in the UK allied with major sporting events boosted spending on summer items such as outdoor and gardening products, BBQ food and holiday clothing, with consumers judging Tesco to be the retailer that had promoted its summer ranges the best, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. The company’s latest

report ‘Summer in the UK 2018’, reveals that 43.3 percent of consumers spent on summer this year, including retail products and leisure. Despite spend on retai l dominat ing, spend on leisure increased as a proportion of overall spending, as UK consumers took advantage of the great weather. Emily Salter, Retail Analyst

This year’s heatwave boosted spending in the UK

at GlobalData commented: “Price continued to drive retailer choice for summer products, as low price was an important influencer for 55.4 percent of food and grocery shoppers, and 54.0 percent of holiday shoppers. The significance of price was despite an increase in per- ceived financial wellbeing. “Along with the heatwave, price-focused retailers could take advantage of the 46.6 percent of consumers who watched the FIFA World Cup, thus capitalising on the

increase in overall summer spending, with retailers such as ASDA, Primark and Aldi increasing their purchaser shares across summer product categories.” Many consumers also

rated price-led retailers amongst the most successful at promot ing summer ranges, with ASDA, Primark, Aldi, Morrisons and Lidl all featuring. Grocers proved to be the best at communicating their summer products, as more consumers bought summer holiday products

MARKET TRADER, NOVEMBER 9 - 22, 2018 Festive market keeping it local

The seventh Christmas market in a North Yorkshire town is a sell-out, with all 200 stalls having been booked, mostly by Yorkshire-based traders offering gifts, clothes, jewellery, food and drink. The four-day event in Harrogate runs from Thursday 15 to Sunday November 18 on the town’s Montpellier Hill. Organiser Brian Dunsby, who leads the

team of volunteers, told local media: “The positive feedback from last year’s traders made us think we would have high demand again this year, but it has once again exceeded all expectations. “Two thirds of this year’s traders have been

before. This enables us to be very selective about our new traders, so we choose those who are based in or near Yorkshire, offering local produce and a variety of hand-made products not found on the High Street. “As well as giving traders an opportunity

to reach a new audience, it makes the Harrogate Christmas Market a unique experience for our visitors. “We have a lot of traders returning and

asking for their usual stall locations, as many customers come back to see them every year. “The Food and Drink Marquee is now full

of independent local producers with small stalls around the walls, and with plenty of

and general summer items, verifying the importance of value for money and convenience. Ms Salter concluded: “Summer provides grocers with a substantial opportunity to capture spending from

tables and chairs in the middle for visitors to rest, whilst enjoying a wide choice of hot and cold food, and non-alcoholic drinks.” Christmas Market Group Chairman Steve

Scarre said: “People often forget that this isn’t a commercial operation – it is run by a team of volunteers who give up a lot of time to make the Christmas Market a success. “As well as being a great event for Harro-

gate district’s many residents and visitors, Harrogate Christmas Market has altruistic purposes. It is run on a not-for-profit basis and any surplus is donated towards other local charitable organisations and events, which also attract visitors to Harrogate.” Brian Dunsby, the former Harrogate Chamber Chief Executive added: “It has always been important for us to use this event to boost tourism at a quiet time of the year to benefit local shops, hotels, restaurants and other businesses. “However, it is still a very professional event

– our traders often comment that it’s the best organised market they take part in. “We’re proud to say that is all down to

the hard work of our team of volunteer Market Makers, plus a few professional sub- contractors looking after traders and visitors.” Free shuttle buses will run shoppers to and

from the market every ten minutes each day the event is on.

disloyal shoppers, as 13.6 percent of consumers switched from their normal retailer when purchasing summer food and grocery items.

“The choice of more unusual products and quality

proved to be important reasons for consumers switching to another retailer, so grocers should focus on product innovation to capitalise upon the demand for interesting, good quality seasonal goods.”
