20 NEWS Big plans for Bradford

Plans are currently being drawn up to redevelop a well known market in a West Yorkshire city, alongside proposals for a major new food market, local media has reported. Bradford Council has already announced its intention to breath new life into its market service, and this includes re-purposing the former Marks & Spencer store on the city’s Darley Street into a multi million pound food only market development. Plans for the regeneration

of the city’s Kirkgate Market were also announced earlier this year, and it is now understood that the new look, non-food market is scheduled to open in the centre in 2020. More detailed plans for Kirkgate Market are expected to be revealed in the New Year, and the Council is hoping both markets will have planning permission in place by next spring. A consultation on the

market plans is currently in place and will last until the end of the year. Members of the public will have access to concept designs of the proposed city centre food market at a number of locations, including the Oastler Centre, Kirkgate

Centre and Broadway Shopping Centre. A report to Bradford

Council’s Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Committee states: “The aim of these consultations is to capture trader and customer opinions on our plans, proposed retail offer and any barriers to encouraging more visits to the markets. “Any comments received

can then inform the design process. “The potential responses

will also capture a cross section from local city centre businesses, Bradford Chamber of Commerce, Bradford Civic Society, Bradford District Chamber of Trade, Elected Members and Council officers.” Members will be given a

list of “key milestones” for the two market redevelopments. The authority is hoping to

secure planning permission for both Kirkgate and the new Darley Street market in the first quarter of 2019. Traders wi l l then be

selected in the summer for the revamped Kirkgate Market and construction work will start in early 2020, with the new look market scheduled to open later that year. Construction work on

the Darley Street market is expected to begin next summer. Traders will be chosen in summer 2020 and the market will open in 2021. According to a report to

the committee, negotiations are ongoing with the head landlord of the Kirkgate Centre regarding the redevelopment,

and further announcements on the plans are expected to be published in the New Year. The Markets shake up will include the demolition of the city’s popular Oastler Centre, which will be replaced by a “City Village”. The council announced recently that it had appointed real estate specialists Cushman and Wakefield to take the project forward, which will eventually see around 1,000 homes built in the area. The authority says the

project will create “a vibrant and attractive urban village environment with green healthy streets and public spaces, homes, independent shops, cafes, bars and business spaces built on high quality and sustainable principles.”

MARKET TRADER, NOVEMBER 9 - 22, 2018

Month long market for Welsh city

Newport city centre is to host a month long German Christmas Market, local media reported recently. A first for the south east Wales city, the market will

be staged from Monday November 19 to Saturday December 22. Arranged by Newport Now Business Improvement

District, the market will feature 29 chalet style stalls and will take place in the city’s Commercial Street, from Westgate Square to its junction with Hill Street. The market is being delivered by International Street

Markets, and stalls will be selling a variety of traditional Christmas food, drink and gifts. Full details of the stalls are due to be revealed by Newport Now in the lead up to the market’s opening. Newport Now manager Kevin Ward told local media:

“We are delighted to be able to announce Newport’s first German Christmas Market. “We know these events are hugely popular in other

towns and cities across the UK and Europe, attracting visitors from far and wide, and we’re confident having the market in place for the crucial month before Christmas will increase footfall and trade for the traditional city centre. “The initial idea for the event came from a BID member

who is an independent trader in Commercial Street, and we think the market will be beneficial for the city centre as a whole. “We’ve worked closely with International Street Markets over a number of months to ensure the market stalls will complement rather than compete with other businesses in the city centre. “International Street Markets are hugely experienced

at delivering this kind of market and we hope it will become an annual fixture in Newport.”
