Shoppers in a South Yorkshire town have been offered a new retail experience following the opening of part of a new shopping and leisure complex. The Glass Works in Barnsley
is opening on a phased basis as work is completed, and the market section opened its doors to the public on Friday November 2. Barnsley Council have promised a new experience for shoppers, who have been used to the covered and semi- open markets designed in the early 1970s as part of the town’s old Metropolitan Centre. The authority says the
environment for the market is bright and modern, “more akin to a department store”, which they believe will provide a stark contrast to the dated surroundings of the old market. It was anticipated that
more than 80 stalls would be occupied when trading started, with 53 stalls operating on the ground floor and another 32 from 40 available upstairs. The vacant pitches are expected to be filled over the coming months. The meat and fish market
opened in late summer – although some of the stalls in that section are still awaiting traders – and the launch of this latest section is seen as the biggest leap forward so far in the development of the Glass Works. Although trading began

on November 2, an ‘official opening’ took place the following day, with Mayor Cllr Steve Green ringing the town’s market bell to symbolise the opening at 10am, following a speech from council leader Sir Steve Houghton. Trading from the old semi-
open market, which had been used as a temporary location until the new facility was completed, has now ceased ahead of the demolition of the multi-storey car park above. Trading at the May Day Green market ended on October 27. Extended opening hours, including Thursdays, will be
a feature of the new market, helping further to align it with contemporary retail habits. Another planned phase of
the development will be a food court, and it is understood that details will be announced. The council has been looking for an outside company to manage that part of the site. Cllr Roy Miller told local media: “We are extremely excited to welcome the traders into The Glass Works and right back into the heart of Barnsley town centre.
“The redevelopment of our
town centre is built around our famous market. “Barnsley has had a market
since 1249 – it’s what we’re famous for and that’s why the new market is at the centre of The Glass Works. “People from far and
wide will want to visit the famous Barnsley Market and celebrate what’s sure to be a fantastic next chapter in its rich history.” The architect responsible for the new market at the
Glass House took inspiration from London’s popular Borough Market to come up with a scheme that maintains the town’s existing traditions but provides a modern home for stallholders. Architect Seamus Lennon,
who works for the firm IBI, visited Borough Market as part of the research for the project and borrowed some of the factors which make that market so successful to help guide the development of Barnsley’s new hall.
