Immerse yourself in law

What are the benefits of taking on this level of degree? According to world renowned scholar, Professor Peer Zumbansen, director of the Transnational Law Institute at the Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College, practicing lawyers are often confronted with the limitations of having to rely on precedent or legislation when advising clients in areas of ‘new’ law, or where court decisions and statutory regulations are not yet sufficiently available. While this might be due to the fact that the law – in a domestic setting – is regularly being devel- oped against the background of ‘tradition’, learned routines and confirmed principles, newly emerging regulatory challenges create frictions. This requires lawyers to navigate ‘the old’ and ‘the new’, which almost always means taking a risk. Decisions in both public and private law practice involve an irreducible degree of uncer- tainty and demand of the lawyer to see beyond the concrete and immanent.

The Executive LLM degree addresses this challenge. It’s an ad- vanced Master of Laws course for ambitious commercial, compe- tition, in-house or regulatory lawyers, keen to build on their achievements and develop their careers. The Executive LLM of- fers a range of unique course content designed to equip talented lawyers with advanced legal, commercial and policy knowledge as well as sectoral expertise. As a professional student, you will also develop complementary skills to make you a more rounded, more accomplished and more successful lawyer. The degree will no doubt increase one’s marketability, provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to come to London and benefit from an educational experience that cannot be duplicated.

Where does this kind of program exist? Executive LLM Programmes and degrees are offered by various Ivy League universities in the United States including Harvard and selected UK universities in the UK such as Oxford, King’s College and London School of Economics.

How long does it take? The two-year course blends online modules with five London- based immersive weekends (two in the first year and three in the second) to build your commercial knowledge, deepen your spe- cialist expertise and broaden your international professional net- work. The immersive weekends provide a unique opportunity to

work in small teams tackling cutting edge legal challenges under the guid- ance of world famous, expert scholars, academics and practitioners.

Are you able to continue in your work while studying? This is a distance learning, part-time

course that is designed for working professionals who can re- main in work while studying.

What are the requirements for entry to the course? Is age relevant to the course or does experience count more? Candidates with a strong practice and academic background are encouraged to apply to the Executive LLM course. There are no age restrictions and, on average, students have five to six years practice experience and a high honours degree. A Master’s de- gree is preferable, though not essential. There may be further in- ternational entry requirements and English language entry requirements.

What does it cost? The fees for the 2018/19 intakes are £30,000 for the LLM and £24,000 for the Postgraduate Diploma. There are a number of scholarships covering up to 100% of postgraduate diploma tu- ition fees available to eligible applicants.

What are the average class sizes? In the recent past an average intake would be anywhere be- tween 24-40 students worldwide.

On a broader level is the course designed to increase specialised knowledge or is there a focus of ‘soft skills’, too?

The focus is on both, increasing specialised knowledge of the different areas of the law, improving technical skills but also hon- ing ‘soft’ skills that today are so necessary to cope with and ad- dress new challenges faced by lawyers and society in general, in today’s complex age. A lawyer is required to place legal prob- lems in a bigger context. Lawyering has not just become more complex (and, by consequence, exciting!), it also has become in- evitably more ‘interdisciplinary’ and collaborative. Lawyers find themselves working with experts in other, non-legal fields, in- cluding digital data governance, genetic modification, climate change governance, or finance and accounting. Practically speak- ing, lawyers working in such areas will frequently resort to team work, to experts, stakeholders and other relevant parties ‘on
