Marevna suffered from depression for which she first sought treatment in the mid-1920s at the Hospital Henri Rousselle in Paris. One of the first ‘open hospitals’, HHR offered an alternative approach for patients who needed help with psychiatric problems but did not necessarily want to be in an asylum.1 During this period, Marevna explored depictions of the hospital and its patients in her work.
