From Rome, Marevna went to Capri and was introduced to the ‘Russian colony’ at the home of Maxim Gorky. During this trip, Gorky named her ‘Marevna’, after the Russian Fairy Sea Princess, because of her ethereal appearance. The name stuck and she used it throughout her professional and life. She also became engaged to Gorky’s stepson Yura, however she soon became tired of him and departed for Paris to develop her art.
