NUMBER
THE WOLF NUMBER came together when Jack (guitar) and Oz (bass) were introduced by their respective partners and were joined by drummer Kev (who you may know from Overreal, Vegas Fame Index and Das Fenster & The Alibis). Their second EP’s due soon so it is time for Pavlis to meet them.
Who are your influences?I’m getting Cream, Sabbath, Portishead and Massive Attack through to Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky. Kev: We love those bands, so we’re always really flattered when people compare us to them. Jack: We’re fans of a wide range of music, including post-rock, trip-hop, psych, jazz and classic rock. Even a bit of prog. Trying to play all those styles is the fun bit, particularly when we’re trying to fit them all into the same song. What are the challenges and advantages of being instrumental? Would you be open to vocals if the right singer came along? Jack: The big advantage is the space and freedom we have to improvise. Most of our songs start out as jams in the practice room, which keeps it interesting and fun. The hard work comes when we start shaping them into songs other people would want to listen to. Kev: We tried out a few singers early on. They were great. We just didn’t feel the music was as unique as the stuff we were coming up with on our own. Oz: We always talk about collaborating with singers though. It is something we’d like to do but it’s unlikely you’ll see a full-time vocalist with The Wolf Number. I love The Bunker Sessions EP - how has it done? Oz: Thank you so much! We’ve been blown away by the response. We weren’t sure whether we were just making music for us but the reviews and the reaction from audiences has been incredible. Second EP There’s Nothing to Fear will be released on Milkman Sounds on 3rd November. What can we expect from it? Kev: We had the chance to take a little more time over this and add some new, exciting elements in the studio. It still captures the sound of us playing together in the same room, which is the basis of everything we do. Oz: We also wanted to use each of the five tracks to explore some different styles and experiment a bit. They’re all really different in feel, ranging from a little bit darker two really upliſting. On the day of the release, you’ll be headlining NAC for Oddbox, supported by Wyldest, Lucille and the Seals and more. Anything special planned for the show? Jack: Playing NAC is always huge for us. We try to do something different each time. We’ll definitely be bringing the visuals, which takes the show to another level. We’re also planning to get a few talented friends up on stage with us, which is really exciting.
