W The SouthWest Chat

elcome to the October issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. I hope you enjoy our coverage of the FEI World Equestrian GamesTM

. We have a couple of events coming up in October.

The Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society (BEHS) will host its 12th annual Bluebonnet Horse Expo and Res- cue Horse Training Challenge on Saturday, October 20 from 9 AM to 7 PM at the Travis County Expo Center in Austin. For four months, volunteer trainers work to develop

a BEHS rescue horse both in hand and under saddle. The volunteer trainers include a mix of professionals and non-professionals who are matched with a horse appro- priate for their skill and comfort level. The trainers showcase their progress at the October 20 event, which marks the conclusion of their four-month commitment. The trainers highlight their achievements by participat- ing in an obstacle course challenge and freestyle com- petition. All participating horses are put up for adoption at the event where BEHS hopes to find them their for- ever homes. The Bluebonnet Horse Expo and Rescue Horse

Training Challenge is a full day of horseback riding, horse education, demonstra- tions by nationally recognized equine professionals, shop- ping, and horse adoptions. Last year, BEHS adopted out nearly 40 horses and raised $60,000. All proceeds help support horses and need. BEHS hopes to exceed last year’s success so even more horses can be helped.

www.bluebonnethorseexpo.com. FEI Dressage Judge General, Stephen Clarke, will

be the featured clinician at the Austin Dressage Unlim- ited (ADU) Judging Seminar to be held October 27-28. The 2-day Seminar will be held at Dripping Springs Ranch Park. The focus of this unique Seminar will be the expectations and judging of horses of various breeds as they progress up the levels from Training level to Grand Prix. Judges commonly see a variety of breeds and types of horses competing in the same class. This Seminar will be very practical in that each level will have at least 2 demo horses in the ring at the same time performing the movements in the same session. If possible, one will be a Warmblood, and the other will be a non-Warmblood breed, both with quality dressage training. Good points and not-so-good points will be discussed for each, and in the same movement as it is being performed by very dif- ferent types of horses. Often, though per- formed differently, the score may end up being nearly the same for each, based on the various criteria that make up the single score for each movement! This will be a great dressage educational

event for Judges, L Grads & Candidates, Trainers/Instructors, and Riders. All dres- sage enthusiasts are welcomed. Approved for USDF Education credit. Visit www.AustinDressageUnlimited.org. w
