AQHA Select World

BOUND To Be Different at AQHA Select World

Jim Bound & Bound To Be Dun were named AQHA Select All-Around Amateur

That’s a wrap on the 2018 AQHA Select

World Championship Show, presented by Ad- equan®. AQHA Select exhibitors from the United States, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica and Switzerland competed for 44 world cham- pionship titles August 24 - September 1 at the Tri-State Fairgrounds in Amarillo.

More than 640 horses and nearly 500 exhibitors competed in western, English and halter events with nearly 1,000 entries in these events. In addition to Level 3 classes, the top three Super-Select and Level 2 competitors were also recognized within each class. This year, 23 first-time world champi-

ons were crowned. View The American QH Journal’s “Journal Winning Run” interviews, starring the best Select riders in the world, and read a variety of stories from the show. If you were unable to join us in Amarillo, or missed the free live webcast, be sure to check out results at www.aqha.com/selectworld. Action at the Tri-State Fairgrounds con- tinued outside of the arena, too! Exhibitors at- tended a welcome party, sponsored by Victor and Hannia Wolf and Ganadera Chomes; vis- ited the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum during the much-anticipated Hall of Fame Party, sponsored by the Amarillo Con- vention and Visitor Council and AQHA; and celebrated at two exhibitor parties. AQHA Professional Horsemen volun- teered their time to give free Ride the Pattern clinics, presented by Nutrena. These clinics gave exhibitors and spectators the perfect op- portunity to learn how AQHA Professional Horsemen would approach a specific class or pattern. Thanks in part to Nutrena’s generosity to match the amount donated at the Ride the Pattern clinics, the Professional Horsemen Cri- sis Fund raised more than $6,000.

10 Special Awards The most prestigious award at the Ade-

quan® Select World is the AQHA Select All- Around title. There were 51 contenders for that title this year. The AQHA Select All-Around Amateur is Jim Bound of Fort Atkinson, WI. Bound showed the American Quarter Horse Bound To Be Dun, owned by JB Bound. Lisa Lubbert of Fort Atkinson bred the 2008 red dun gelding, who is by Dun It Gotta Gun and out of Not Dun Cookin. Bound and Bound To Be Dun earned 56.5 points. Seventy-seven Super-Select exhibitors were eligible for the Gene Graves Super-Se- lect Special Recognition Award, an all-around title for exhibitors ages 70 and over. This year, Butch Morgan of Elbert, CO, and SF Check Me Out took home the title. SF Check Me Out is a 1999 bay gelding, who is by Look Whos Larkin and out of Katie Chex, bred by Steve Fleming of Comanche, TX.

The Nutrena Senior Athlete was also awarded to the exhibitor and horse pair that had the highest com- bined age competing at the Adequan® Select World. Susan Olson of Scotts- dale, AZ, and WW Lad were named the 2018 Nutrena Senior Athletes with a combined age of 103. The Nutrena Senior Athletes of the Show Award recognizes not only the exhibitors, but their equine partners. WW Lad, bred by Wayne Werner

of Beaumont, TX, is a 1988 gray geld- ing by Brights Lad and out of Chudej’s Mae by Chudej’s Dandy. The pair earned seventh-place in the stake race. WW Lad was also the oldest horse to

SouthWest Horse Trader October 2018 compete at this year’s show. The sorrel mare Glowin was named the

top AQHA Ranching Heritage-bred horse. Glowin and Douglas Pritchett of Amarillo were the world champions in team penning and ranch sorting at the event. Glowin is by Shiver Shake and out of Sly Glo Return. Dick Cogdell of Tulia, TX bred the mare. As the owner of the top RHB-bred horse of the show, Pritchett received $250 and a specially designed trophy. As the breeder, Cogdell also received $250. It was a bittersweet show for many com- petitors as this marked the 16th year for the Adequan® Select World at the Tri-State Fair- grounds in Amarillo. The 2019, 2020 and 2021 shows will be held at the Will Rogers Memori- al Center in Fort Worth. w
