CHE LT ENHAM SHORIN RYU KARATE

ATTENDS THE FIRST KARATE & KOBUDO INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT

During August three members of the Cheltenham Ladies College Karate & Kobudo Club headed off to Okinawa, Japan, to participate in the first Karate & Kobudo International Tournament. The team consisted of Paul Vermiglio Sensei, Julian Dennis and Clare Edwards. Arriving in Narita, Japan for a two-day stay before heading to Okinawa, they visited magnificent temples around the area of Chiba which proved a timely stopover before the rigorous training at the Shimbunkan and Mukenkai Hombu Dojo lead by Akamine Hiroshi Sensei would begin, and not to mention the five-day tournament and seminar events in the Naha Budokan and the new prestigious Karate Kaikan in Tomigusuku.

Having previously spent five years on the island of Okinawa, Sensei Vermiglio said; “Okinawan Karate and Kobudo has been preserved and handed down from generation to generation. Okinawa Prefecture continues to strive to preserve, pass on and develop Okinawan Karate and Kobudo and has further established the ‘Okinawa Karate Kaikan’ as a symbolic facility providing information to both Japan and abroad. I’m always delighted to share the fruits of Okinawa with my students in the hope that they can gather and build connections to properly inherit and develop their skills, spirit and to further promote the development of Okinawa Traditional Karate and Kobudo in Cheltenham through their own self- development and continuous training.”

2,300 western students participated throughout the tournament and seminars. It was a great honour for Sensei Vermiglio to be chosen to demonstrate the Manji Sai with the Jigen Nu Sai Kata at the opening ceremony along with seven other prominent demonstrators.

Clare and Julian fully engaged in both Karate and Kobudo seminars and two noteworthy achievements for this dedicated Cheltenham team included Sensei Vermiglio’s promotion to 7th Dan Karate and Clare’s first ever test at the Hombu Dojo in front of Sensei Akamine to 1st Dan Karate.

Clare Edwards reflected on the trip; “It was an unbelievable opportunity to be invited to travel with Sensei Vermiglio to train in Okinawa. Watching Sensei participate in the opening ceremony and go on to compete in the International Championship was incredible. I met so many dedicated students from around the world and was humbled to attend seminars where we were taught by Okinawan Sensei’s.

It was the greatest honour and privilege to be graded by Kaicho Akamine Sensei at the Hombu Dojo. It was a wonderful experience that I shall never forget.”
