6 NEWS IN BRIEF

EWA is working to upgrade Bahrain’s

power network Bahrain: The state agency

responsible for utilities, the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), is working on a vast upgrade of the 220-KV electrical transmission network, as well as an expansion of power generation capacity. Most of the new megawatts will

come from the Al Dur Phase Two expansion. EWA is also developing smaller-scale solar and waste-driven power generation plants to diversify the country’s energy mix.

Shale oil to meet Jordan’s energy

needs? A large capacity pipeline from a

neighbouring state is now under construction in northern Jordan, designed to supply the kingdom with 3 BCM of gas per year. This will satisfy the bulk of Jordan’s natural gas consumption needs for power generation. The pipeline is expected to begin

operating by 2020. A new development - oil shale - could also change Jordan's power generation dynamic as it represents a significant potential resource in Jordan. Oil shale deposits underlie more

than 60% of Jordanian territory, and are estimated at 40 to 70 billion tonnes of oil shale. No oil shale industry exists in Jordan, but several companies are considering both shale oil extraction and oil shale combustion for thermal power generation. A series of projects are underway for the future to make available 37,000 tonnes of shale oil in the central region of Attarat, 15,000 tonnes in Karak, and to develop thousands of tonnes of potential shale reserves along the Jordanian- Iraqi border.

Three SGT5-4000F gas turbines and three SGen5-1200A generators coming to Dubai

functional in commercial terms by Spring 2020, says the manufacturer. Siemens will supply three SGT5-4000F

gas turbines, three SGen5-1200A generators and the control system SPPA-T3000. As a peak load power plant, the new

Siemens will supply the Dubai Electric-

ity and Water Authority (DEWA) with three SGT5-4000F gas turbines for the Al Aweer power plant complex, located approximately 35km from downtown Dubai. The project has been awarded to

Siemens as part of a consortium led by Egypt-based El Sewedy Electric Co SAE through its subsidiary Elsewedy Power. With an electrical generating capacity of

about 815MW, the turbines are expected to increase the total output of the power plant complex to more than 2.8 GW. Three gas turbine trains will be fully

Unit H Phase 4 with its latest F-class gas turbine technology aims to cover a particularly high energy demand in the emirate’s hot summer months and during the upcoming EXPO 2020 exhibition. Jean-Claude Nasr, vice-president for

sales for the Middle East and North Africa at Siemens, told MEP: “For more than 20 years, we have been

working successfully with DEWA to continuously improve Dubai’s local power generation infrastructure and help to ensure sufficient and reliable power supply in this Middle Eastern metropolis.” According to a company report, around

two-thirds of DEWA’s total installed power plant capacity, amounting to approximately 10.2 GW, is based on Siemens technology.

A ‘first’ for the UAE with Barakah One issued with an Electricity Generation Licence

UAE: The Department of Energy, DoE,

recently issued an 'Electricity Generation Licence' to Barakah One Company, the joint venture subsidiary company owned by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, ENEC, and the Korea Electric Power Corporation, KEPCO. The Electricity Generation Licence from

DoE is an important milestone for Nawah, the operating and maintenance subsidiary of ENEC and KEPCO, to obtain the Operating License from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, FANR. DoE’s assessment and analysis has confirmed that Barakah One Company has met the requirements necessary to

obtain the electricity generation licence. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, DoE Chair-

man, said that generating electricity from nuclear energy is one of the best long-term solutions for the production of clean, efficient and reliable power to support UAE’s continued economic growth and diversification. He expressed his pride in the fact that

the UAE is the first country in the Gulf region to have started such an ambitious journey towards the future, adding that the Electricity Generation Licence granted to Barakah One Company is the first of its kind in the region that will ultimately allow it to generate electricity from peaceful nuclear energy.
