400MW Saudi windfarm - bids
under consideration Four companies are on the shortlist
for the $500m Dumat Al Jandal 400 MW wind project, which will be in the northern Al Jouf region of Saudi Arabia. The four bids will now be evaluated
and the project will be awarded in December 2018, backed by a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Saudi Power Procurement Company. One of the key bidders is a
consortia led by ACWA Power, EDF Energies Nouvelles, Enel Green Power and International Power SA, the Dubai branch of ENGIE. The location for Dumat Al Jandal
was chosen after predevelopment studies showed a strong mixture of wind capabilities on the site. The average annual generation from the plant is expected to be around 1.4 TWh.
Saudia Arabia in deal with SoftBank
Group for energy Saudi Arabia has launched one of
the world’s biggest solar power project, backed by financing from SoftBank Group’s Vision Fund. The project is expected to have the
capacity to produce up to 200 GW by 2030, SoftBank Chief Executive, Masayoshi Son, has said. Saudi Arabia is keen to reduce its
dependence on fossil fuels for power generation, a part of its Vision 2030 reform plan. The final investment total for the
200 GW of generation is put at $200bn. This includes solar panels, battery storage and a manufacturing facility for panels in Saudi Arabia. The initial phase of the project, for
7.2 GW of solar capacity, will cost US$5bn, with $1 billion coming from SoftBank’s Vision Fund and the rest from project financing.
Emirates District Cooling awarded Expo 2020 district cooling contract in Dubai

been awarded a contract to provide a district cooling plant for the Expo 2020 in Dubai. The Dubai Metro system, inaugurated in
2009, is the first mass transit network in the world to use district cooling to lower temperatures in stations and trains. Emicool will develop a district cooling
plant to serve the Expo Village and Dubai South Mall, as well as the Conference and Exhibition Centre at the Expo site, the Roads & Transport Authority station and the Project Star mall area. Al Nasr Contracting Company has been
appointed as the official contractor for the project.

District cooling for Dubai’s Cityland Mall to be provided by Empower
Emirates Central Cooling Systems
Corporation (Empower) has begun work on a US$40m district cooling scheme to serve the Cityland Mall, next to Global Village in Dubai, with a total capacity of 14,000 Refrigeration Tonnes (RT). The original contract was signed in April
2018 by H. H. Sheikh Theyab Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Cityland Group, and Ahmad bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, at the Cityland Mall Site Office. At the time, H, Sheikh Theya Bin
TahnoonAl Nahyan commented: “This significant agreement with Empower will drive environmental as well as economical returns while making a major impact on Cityland Mall. As the world’s first nature- inspired shopping destination, the unique

design and development of the mall will ensure environmental sustainability while being an attractive destination for residents and tourists.” With over 350-stores covering 1,125,000
square feet, Cityland Mall is described as ‘the ideal combination of convenience and shopping, with a retail mix which also showcases its versatility, and a single- level, circular design which allows for continuous customer flow’. Cityland Mall will feature a substantial
200,000-sq-ft open-air garden called Central Park. This is said to form the epicentre of the mall, in terms of ‘both architecture and its anchoring role in providing a unique sensory experience for shoppers’.
