Congressman Bobby Scott Meets with Constituents in Town Hall
The Hampton Roads Messenger 3
BY HRM STAFF Due to heightened and at times
angry emotions in our political climate, legislators across the country have shown hesitation to interact with constituents in town halls. Congressman Bobby Scott held two town hall meetings in Chesapeake and Newport News in August 2018. Earlier this year he held a Tax Bill Town Hall in Portsmouth. Congressman Scott provided an update on the ongoing efforts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act, the growing cost of the recent tax cuts, legislation he recently introduced to provide every student with the opportunity to earn a debt-free college degree and interacted with constituents about their concerns.
Health Care Many point out the imperfections
of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) but Congressman Scott
says before the
ACA things were even “less perfect”. Scott pointed out that aſter the
2008 recession a lot of people loss their employer related health care either
because they lost their job or their
employer stopped providing coverage. Policies also lacked coverage for essential items: 62% lacked coverage for maternity care, 32% lacked coverage for substance use treatment, 18% lacked coverage for treatment of mental health issues, and 9% lacked coverage for prescription drugs. Te number of uninsured hovered between 14% and 16% but dropped to around 9% aſter passage.
Congressman Scott pointed out
Republicans have voted over 60 times to repeal parts or all of the ACA during the last 8 years.
In May of 2017, the
House passed the American Health Care Act, also known as Trumpcare, to repeal and replace the ACA.
It
was passed before any nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis on the legislation was complete. Te House passed plan increased costs or out of pocket expense and included over $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid.
