Making Higher Education More Mr. Eddie Logan, III, Men’s Day Chairperson

Reverend Dr. Oretha P. Cross St. Paul AME Church 2500 Chestnut Avenue Newport News, VA (757) 245-6181

Affordable Last month Education Secretary

Betsy DeVos announced plans to form a negotiated rulemaking committee to rewrite rules regarding accountability in higher education. As ranking member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce Congressman Bobby Scott called the move ominous:

“Te regulatory agenda announced today by Education

Secretary Betsy DeVos is an ominous sign for students and taxpayers. Te current rules governing oversight and accountability in higher education reflect the responsibility and intent of Congress to create a system in which student and taxpayer dollars are spent on quality programs that prepare students for success. By initiating a process to weaken or eliminate those rules, Secretary DeVos is attempting to rewrite the Higher Education Act (HEA) in a way that undermines the quality of our higher education system and increases the opportunities for predatory institutions to profit by exploiting student financial aid.”

House Democrats on the

Committee introduced a comprehensive reauthorization of the Higher Education Act – the Aim Higher Act – which they say ensures every student has a path to a debt-free degree or credential that leads to a rewarding career. Democratic legislators

invests in students,

say the Aim Higher Act makes higher

education more affordable today, and addresses the rising cost of college to reduce the burden on students in the future. Brief highlights:

-Makes college more affordable

today – by investing in federal student aid –

and helps states make public

college tuition more affordable in the future – by incentivizing states to reinvest in higher education,

-Cracks down on predatory

for-profit institutions that target students and veterans with expensive, low-quality programs,

-Protects and expands the Public

Service Loan Forgiveness program, which is eliminated the GOP PROSPER Act, and makes student loans simpler and easier to repay,

-Provides students the tools they

need to graduate on time with a quality degree,

Invests in teachers and strengthens

training for teachers and school leaders to improve the quality of our schools.
