What you need to know before you get pierced

Y

ou want to get your ears pierced. Lobes, upper cartilage, whatever. You've got two options before you - a

piercing crossroads if you will. You can head over to the mall, to a kiosk or hair salon and get them done with a pierc- ing gun, or you can head to a piercing studio, and have it done with a nee- dle. Most people

who pierce your ears at a mall have little to no train- ing in safe pierc- ing pr ac t ic e s , sanitation, or how to heal a wound.

Tey're usually hairdressers, estheticians, or teenagers working at a costume jewelry store for kids. Tey're taught to load and fire up a weapon on anyone looking for a new hole or wanting to bedazzle their baby. What could go wrong? Well, I feel like we've all had conversations

where we talk about our piercing experi- ences. “Tey got infected,” or “I had to get the backing cut out by a doctor,” or “Tey never healed and always hurt, so I took them out.” Te list goes on. Tey punch these gems through yourself or your child made of mys- tery metal, give you some sort of aftercare serum, and send you on your merry way. So, what does it look like at South of

Heaven? Well, most piercing studios are combined with tattoo shops, and most of them won't pierce babies or very young kids. Why? Consent. If a 7-year-old child can come into my shop and tell me they want their ears pierced, that's step one. Step two

There are many things to take into consideration before deciding to get a piercing.

is to talk to the child about aftercare. I like to go with “Do you promise you won’t touch them? Do you promise you won’t pick at them or let your friends touch them?” and we go on and on. If the child seems game, then we pick out some jewelry made of body safe materials. ASTM F- 318 stainless steel or ASTM F-136 titanium are the options in our shop, as well as a material known as Niobium. I set up my tools, single-use needles, and

jewelry, all of which have been run through an autoclave for sterilization. Te piercing is done with a bar that gives some extra

space for swelling. Whether it's an adult or child I'm piercing, it's always the same talks we have. Are they feeling alright? Are they ready? Do they want to proceed with the second earlobe? Afterwards, we talk again because a dialogue is very important to be a good piercer. Our in-shop aftercare is medical saline with no additives, we ask our customers to return so we can check up on their piercings, downsize them (put in a shorter bar once the swelling has gone down to reduce movement in the area), and let them know their restrictions, such as not going into lakes or swimming pools.

Tose are your options, and if you want to

see what a piercing gun vs a piercing needle does to your tissue – try this: grab a piece of paper, a pen, and a hole punch. Holding the paper tight, shove the pen through it, that's what a piercing gun does. Now take the paper and hole punch it – that's what a single-use hollow needle does. Remem- ber - your piercer's job is to pierce you, not cut your hair or do your nails, they have one specific purpose and that is to make sure they can offer you the best piercing experience possible for yourself or for your loved ones.
