Gretchen Smeltzer (left) and Nicole Carter both felt called to help those in need. Into the Light was formed to preventing the sex trafficking of minors through education and training.

“Into the Light cannot ad-

dress the issue alone,” Smeltzer said, adding every- one who interacts with the child should be informed and educated. “It takes a collabo- rative approach.” Almost every week,

trained advocates from the organization visit four deten- tion centers in Benton, Wash- ington, Independence and Garland counties to identify

survivors and assist in find- ing them resources. They also visit the survivors wherever they live after leaving the de- tention center. Because the advocates are consistent, visiting and talking with the girls often, they build rapport and trust. “We understand in our

culture how difficult it is to disclose they’ve been sexual- ly abused,” Smeltzer said.
