“I never saw myself as a kindergarten principal,” Wood said. “I absolutely love it. I love this age group. It’s the start of everything.”
Even so, there wasn’t much money to
go around, and when Wood was in high school she cleaned the lunchroom in ex- change for free lunches. With tears in her eyes, she recounted how her high school basketball coach Wayburn Wat- son noticed and made some arrange- ment so she could play basketball after eating, like the other students. This has allowed her to pay it forward and she’s conscious of investing in the lives of others.
“I think I learned that from the people
who invested in me,” Wood said. “We were poor in money but rich in love.” Wood went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science in Education degree at Southern Arkan- sas University in Magnolia, where she also played women’s basketball for four years under coach Margaret Downing. “The upbringing of women deter- mines where their path goes,” Wood said.
Janet Wood has served 38 years of various leadership roles in the Mountain Home School District.
