LIVE 24-SEVEN THE ORCHARD CONTINUES TO BLOSSOM
The Orchard - Residential Care Home continues to blossom and thrive. It was a cold and frosty day in January 2017 when a brand new residential care home opened its doors to welcome its first residents.
Set in an amazing location with ab- solutely stunning views down the beautiful Wye Valley, near to the historic market town of Monmouth, the clear vision by its owners, Milkwood Care, for the newly built The Orchard was “a stylish, yet homely place to live, with a warm and friendly ambience. ” Their guid- ing principle was that life at The Orchard would be “a positive, life-enhancing experience”
Eighteen months later, and with the temperature a few degrees warmer, Michelle Jeans, Home Manager, shares her thoughts on how their vision has been realised and how residents are finding life at The Orchard.
“We believe we’ve created a really personal caring environment for our residents. Our small number of bedrooms means that everyone is a familiar face and we are just like a close-knit family. All our bedrooms are large and spacious, our residents have access to a communal lounge, dining room and library which all have lovely views.
The Orchard is a warm and happy place, where in addition to relaxing, residents can enjoy a rich schedule of activities; participate in their favourite pastimes, learn new skills or venture outdoors.”
“Inside the home, movement classes such as dance therapy and fitness are very popular, as are the more ‘gentle’ activities such as art club, dog therapy and cooking. The hair salon has been put to good use, and the ladies, especially, tell us that they really have a lift by having their hair done. We also have a highly experienced manicurist that comes fortnightly to the home.”
“This summer, The Orchard’s garden has really come into its own and residents have spent many hours outdoors enjoying what the home’s beautiful grounds have to offer. Residents have been able to enjoy the fabulous changing views of the surrounding countryside throughout the seasons. In spring, we had our flowerbeds awash with daffodils and it was a beautiful display. We now have our wild flower meadow in full bloom and looking amazing with a blanket of poppies and cornflowers gracing the landscape.”
“We have a bird table on the patio with numerous birds visiting daily. We have also in- stalled bird boxes for swallows and they are impressed with their new homes. Residents have filled wheelchair height planters with salads and herbs for our kitchen garden.
"Our private minibus has enabled residents to venture out on regular outings, from short jaunts to Monmouth for shopping or visiting eateries, to all day trips to the Forest of Dean, Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, Redbrook Church and a long list of other local attractions."
“During the last 18 months, we’ve received positive comments from our residents and their families saying that The Orchard is a lovely place to live and visit and we are delighted that our vision has come to fruition. For me, it’s been a pleasure to work here and welcome everyone into such happy and vibrant home.”
