stage Coming to the Geffen

Playhouse this September is the provocative play, The Cake, written by Bekah Brunstetter, best known for her smash hit television show This Is Us on NBC. Coproduced with the Echo

Theatre Company, it’s the story about a somewhat conservative mother, Della, who makes cakes for a living, and leaves all tough deci- sions to her husband. All is well until her best friend’s lesbian daughter asks her to bake a cake for her upcoming wedding. What will

she decide? Newly appointed Geffen Artistic Director

Matt Shakman, tackles his first coproduction with this piece, something he plans to continue doing. “This is my first season at the Geffen, it’s the first chance I’ve had to transfer a production and I expect to bring one a season moving forward,” Shakman said. “I ran an intimate theatre in Los Angeles (Black Dahlia Theatre) for 17 years and have enormous respect and appreciation for the work being done in the 99-seat community.”

A MULTI-LAYERED CREATION by tom andrew

I THINK WHEN PEOPLE ACTUALLY MEET

THE PEOPLE THAT CONTROVERSY

SURROUNDS AND HAVE A CONVERSATION,

WHEN THEY MEET THE GAY ROOMMATE OF THEIR SON

OR THE GAY BEST FRIEND OF THEIR DAUGHTER,

IT MAKES IT A BIT HARDER TO JUDGE.”
