AS curious problems go … the need to weed your parish church towermay just have it. Airborne seeds lodged in the an-

cient stonework at Saint Nicholas’ Church in Leeds had grown to be- come not just an eyesore, but were further eroding the 12th century structure. Aswell as the precarious position

of the plants and the height of the tower – which houses the church clock and one of the earliest surviv- ing 10-bell frames in the UK – the issue seemed to present an insur- mountable problem. But staff at Leeds Castle came to

the rescue, stepping in to arrange for rescue specialists TaskMasters to scale the stonework and clear the weeds. Once the weeds were cut down

the exposed rootswere treatedwith an adhesive mixture of weed-killer prepared by the castle’s head gar- dener. Churchwarden Brian Hardy at St

Nicholas’ thanked the castle’s CEO Sir David Steel for his help and his

contact, and the estate’s services manager Colin Day for co-ordinat- ing the work.Mr Hardy said: “The teamworked long hours in very hot weather andaroundtwo very active bees’nests. They also removedsome very loose stones that were in dan- ger of falling. “The result is a much improved

appearance to Leeds church and perhaps, more importantly, a signif- icantmitigation to the rapiddeterio- ration of the tower stonework. In the futurewewill still have tomake re- pairs to the aged and damagedma- sonry but we have gained some respite.”

News Plumpickers help church

A CROP of plums has helped harvest vital funds to repair the church at Broomfield. The trees, loaded with favourite varieties including Victoria, have been

gifted for the last 10 seasons to the church friends’ group by Leeds farmer Simon Brice. Pickers had to wait longer than

last year for the crop to ripen, in spite of the very hot weather, but turned out in force over several weekends. The Friends manned a stall at

the orchard to sell the fruit. Since it started, the initiative

has raised about £29,000, which has helpedwithwork including re- plastering and painting the inside of Leeds church and will help re- store the tower at Broomfield. The Friends’ group has raised

more than £90,000 for the churches since they formed in 1999. Secretary Judi Taylor (pictured)

said: “We organise social events, such as our beer festival in 2017 and flower festival in 2016, and, of course, the ‘plumming’ in August, butwe always need newmembers and volunteers on our committee.” Anyone interested in getting involved should email juditaylor2@btin-

ternet.com. Work to repair the stonework of Broomfield tower is expected to start in the spring, thanks to community donations and with the help of the Co-op, following advice about bats.
