BIFAlink Cargo Village at Farnborough Airshow

The Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) celebrated its 70th birthday this year and cargo took centre stage with a 1,000 sq m village around a static display of cargo aircraft, including CargoLogicAir’s Boeing 747-8F Freighter and Volga Dnepr Group’s Antonov 124-100. The air cargo village was

reintroduced at the 2016 FIA in recognition of the renewed growth that the air cargo sector has witnessed in recent years. However, for the first time, this

year the event was also accompanied by a two-day conference programme supported by IATA. The exhibition hall featured an

array of air cargo businesses from across the supply chain. There were also several live loading demonstrations and an opportunity to get onboard the aircraft and see the insides of these “giants of the sky”. Having a cargo village and

conference at this year’s FIA was considered the best way to demonstrate the vital role air cargo plays in aerospace supply chains. The conference brought together

high-profile experts to discuss a range of interesting topics and issues, including a spotlight on ‘Special Cargo’ and a session titled ‘Capitalising on UK Cargo Growth’, which focused on the key priorities for the implementation of the third

runway at Heathrow. In another interesting session, a

senior representative of The Boeing Company discussed the future of cargo aircraft and the audience heard that global demand for an additional 2,600 freighters is forecast by 2037, which reflects the confidence in the growth of air cargo, estimated to increase by an average of 4.2% per annum over

the next 20 years. The role and impact of unmanned

aerial vehicles (UAV), commonly known as a drones, was the feature of a panel discussion and provided a fascinating insight into the possibilities for UAVs to offer new routes to market, along with potential opportunities for delivering to remote and inaccessible areas. Visitors were also able to

discover how cargo airlines protect the integrity of temperature- sensitive pharmaceutical products and learn more about the air cargo involvement in humanitarian activities, which deserve special recognition. The FIA is a biennial event,

returning in 2020; the Cargo Village is set to become a notable attraction for the air cargo industry.
