NEWS Gullane accolade
OBITUARY Simon Tullett
We are sad to report that, in this personality-led industry, one of the well- known names has left us. Simon Tullett, founder of STM Co Ltd of Warwickshire - a supplier of SCAG equipment - died in hospital recently.
As the players and spectators set out across Gullane Golf Club at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, they stepped onto a course in excellent playing condition - and flying a new accolade as a GEO Certified® golf club.
The club recently received the international marque of distinction for sustainability in golf, recognising their efforts to foster nature, conserve resources and benefit their local community.
In doing so, the club joins previous events hosts Royal Aberdeen, Castle Stuart and Dundonald Links in demonstrating the sport’s highest
standards and helps deliver on the European Tour’s stated policy of encouraging venues to be run in an environmentally and socially responsible way.
Stewart Duff, Course Manager said: “This award is recognition for the care and responsibility the entire greenkeeping team applies to their work. We are all very proud of the local environment and want to do everything we can to protect and enhance it, for golfers and to the wider benefit of the community. We are extremely grateful to Scottish Golf’s Environmental Advisory Service for their excellent and invaluable support.”
He had been suffering health problems for a couple of years and was awaiting heart surgery, but sadly succumbed to kidney failure. It is very touching that, once indications came about that things were really not good, the hospital assisted in the arrangements for a wedding blessing to take place at his bedside for the marriage of his daughter Olivia so that he could give her away. It is a testament to the man that, despite his weak condition, he still managed to come out with “and I’m not having her back, either”.
Simon had always been involved in the outdoor machinery world and spent many years in sales with Tony Turner at Turner International, then worked for Agria, before deciding to set up on his own.
A very successful trial venture with SCAG machinery led to a thirty-year association, still thriving today under the ownership of Dominic Mason.
Simon made a mark in the industry and is greatly respected for the company he developed and his involvement in the groundcare industry.
He leaves behind Jayne and daughter Olivia. Promoting Best Practice

Mick Hunt set to retire from Lord’s
MCC has announced that Head Groundsman Mick Hunt is to retire at the end of the 2018 season.
Mick joined the groundstaff in December 1969 and was appointed Head Groundsman in 1985, following the retirement of Jim Fairbrother. The search will now begin for Mick’s successor, with a view to recruiting a replacement who can take the reins for the 2019 season.
“Mick has given outstanding service to MCC and to Lord’s, and he will be a very tough act to follow,” said John Stephenson, MCC Assistant Secretary (Cricket).
8 PC August/September 2018
“World Cup Finals, Tests and One-Day Internationals featuring some of the biggest names in cricket have all been played here on pitches that he has prepared.”
“There is something special about playing on the hallowed turf at Lord’s that inspires cricketers at every level to deliver great performances, with some earning a place on the Dressing Room Honours Boards.”
“Mick retires one year short of a half-century, but his place in the history of Lord’s is assured."
