Youngsters put their valley in the picture

THE fourth annual Peters Village “Why I Love My Valley” Schools Art Competition focusing on pho- tography was the best so far, ac- cording to the head teacher of the winning school. Jonathan Bassett, of StMark’s Pri-

mary School in Eccles reflected on his school’s success after the second win in two years. MrBassett said: “Winningmay be

even more satisfying than 2017, be- cause this generation of children is themost comfortable everwithcam- eras and photography. “Every household will have sev-

eral smartphones, so creativity was driven much more by the children themselves.” “Theywere alsomore excited this

time and supported by their fami- lies, as I sawwhile cyclinghome and coming across a St Mark’s family taking photos on a valley path.” “The children also enjoyed un-

earthing school history via photos and records; discovering details of a school coach trip to Margate being

one highlight.” St Mark’s won the £2,000 grand

prize, and despite having no plans for howto spendthewinnings, they may look at ways of expanding the interest shown in photography by the children. The competitionwas launched by

thedevelopers behindPetersVillage in 2015, to help build a relationship between the new 1,000-home com- munity and its long-established neighbours on the RiverMedway’s

east bank,Wouldhamand Burham. Borough and parish councillor

Roger Dalton, the formerMayor of Tonbridge &Malling, served as the judge of the art competition and praised the children’s efforts. He said: “You are allwinners and

have raised the standard of this great competition year on year.” His successor andMayor of Ton-

bridge andMalling, Cllr PamBates, presented the awards to the three schools.
