42 PROJECT REPORT: MIXED USE SCHEMES
Polypipe Terrain to supply drainage system to landmark
P
olypipe Terrain, the UK’s leading plastic piping manufacturer, is to supply the water management system to one of
London’s most recognisable commercial developments. The Kent-based business will provide
its Terrain FUZE HDPE plastic drainage solution to the £150m 10 Fenchurch Avenue tower in the City of London. The 15-storey, 420,000 sq ft mixed-use property, which was designed by the award-winning Eric Parry Architects, will have a ‘crown-shaped’ landscaped roof garden, complete with a restaurant, pergola canopies, water feature, a range of climbing and hanging plants, and walking and seating areas. The vast complex replaces six buildings,
which were demolished throughout 2014 and 2015. Once completed, the facility will house office and retail units. Claire Stafford, technical sales manager at Polypipe Terrain, said: “It is a real pleasure to
be asked to supply our product to such a unique project. “Having delivered drainage systems to tall buildings for more than 50 years, we were able to design and deliver an engineered solution to significantly reduce installation time and labour onsite. “We very much look forward to seeing the
system installed and in action on the opening of this one-of-a-kind building.” Made of high-density polyethylene, Terrain
FUZE HDPE weighs less than cast iron systems and is available in longer lengths, which require less jointing. Lee Rouvray, director at Fitzpatrick
Mechanical Services, which is installing the drainage system, said: “We are delighted to be working with Polypipe Terrain on this project. The company is able to cater for the complex demands associated with a development of this nature. “We are particularly pleased with the versatility of the Polypipe Terrain team and
Offices transformed into a beautiful jewel with Reynaers
luminium systems company Reynaers has helped to transform a former 1970s office block, in Shoreditch, into a beautiful industrial jewel. Architects Dexter Moren Associates drew inspiration from the area’s 19th century warehouse heritage and Reynaers’ aluminim windows and doors have helped create the look perfectly. Architect Zoe Tallon scooped the
A
prestigious Creative Spark Award for her work on the ambitious project. The award recognises the best-designed new hotel, and is voted by delegates of the TOP HOTEL PROJECTS World Tour London, comprising a wide selection of influential industry peers including fellow architects, hoteliers, investors, interior designers, suppliers and the media. Hotelier Michael Achenbaum wanted his
high-profile restaurants, hotel and members club to reflect the area’s architectural tradition, industrial history and creativity. The facade consists of red brick and
features Reynaers’ CS 38 slim line windows, CP 130 sliding patio doors and CW 50 curtain walling. The next generation of CS 38 is now
available from Reynaers – Slim Line 38 (SL 38) is a highly insulated inward and outward opening aluminium window and door system, that combines elegance and comfort with a unique design. The special slender steel look offers the perfect windows and doors for modern architecture and the renovation of steel-frames, respecting the original design but offering a thermally improved solution. Large-framed Crittall Windows
complement the industrial aesthetic and gives the building a unique character and identity of its own. The fabricator on the project was AWS Turner Fain Ltd, part of AWS Group. The Curtain incorporates a live music
venue, a state-of-the-art gym, spa area with treatment and steam rooms, ballroom, pop-up barber shop, screening room,

terrace with a restaurant bar. There is also a Moroccan-style heated pool offering stunning views across the City skyline. Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager for Reynaers, said: “The Curtain is not only an award-winning landmark building, but one that perfectly reflects the heritage of Shoreditch. “A sensitive use of urban red brickwork,
our steel-look profiles and large openings have drawn inspiration from cabinet factories and warehouses that previously featured on the site.”

products. The plastic involved is easy to install, durable and lightweight, which is perfect for construction sites. “Polypipe Terrain was also able to deliver engineered solutions using butt welding, and negotiate the design challenges on site. “We look forward to continuing our strong working relationship on future projects.” The building is due to open in March
