Hosepipe ban:

Firm behind shortage leaks millions of litres of water a each year

THE hosepipe ban will see firemen practice with empty hoses while football pitches are ruined – but the water firm imposing the ban admits leaks totalling enough water to fill Wembley Stadium 160 times a year! Some United Utilities reservoirs have dropped to just 40%

capacity as the region prepared for a hosepipe ban in the North West on August 5. Firemen in West Sussex did training drills without water in

hoses to save water during 2012’s hosepipe ban, West Sussex County Council said. Asked if it would welcome firemen using “dry” hoses, a

United Utilities spokesperson said: “We would encourage everyone to save water, however they possibly can.” All amateur local football, rugby and cricket clubs in the

North-West area will be banned from using sprinklers and hosepipes – with the only exception being if cricket clubs can prove watering wickets with watering cans leaves wickets too dangerous to use. Clubs in bigger semi-professional and professional leagues -

including Manchester United FC and Lancashire CCC will be exempt. A United Utilities spokesman said: “Sports grounds are

affected by the hosepipe ban unless hosting a regional, national or international event. “Specific areas of play such as cricket wickets can be watered

by hosepipe to make sure activities can be carried out safely from a health and safety perspective.

“But all other grass watering in sports grounds is covered

under restrictions of the ban.” United Utilities is imposing bans despite leaking almost a

quarter of its total supply - enough to fill Wembley 160 times a year! The firm leaks 3,073 million litres of water a week, figures

from industry body Water UK showed, working out at 159,796 million litres a year. It would take 1,000 million litres of water to fill Wembley Stadium. A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Reducing leaks is a top priority. We have cut leakage by half since the 1990s.”

New to the Bailoy range is the GTI EC irrigation control software in Pro and Lite versions. These GTI EC controllers retain many features of the GTI PC stablemate while being more economical and simple to use, making them perfect for smaller sites with modest budgets.
