Meet the Owner of


The Old Vicarage


Leading interior designer, Mark Smith, spent most of his adult life living and working in West London. He’d been coming to the Island for many years to visit friends in Cowes, but never expected to end up living here.


“For nearly twenty years, I have been weekending in the Cotswolds, which sounds pretty idyllic. However, the more time I spent on the Island, the more I came to love and appreciate the variety of geography, from the rural centre to the amazing coastline. The life on the water — shipping, sailing, even the ferries coming and going — add a feeling of constant activity and change of view.


“The Island has changed a great deal, for the better. It feels like it has a younger demographic now and the restaurant scene, for example, is better than ever.


“Part of my decision to move out of London completely was the desire for some real space. The Old Vicarage provides just that, with two and a half acres of lovely gardens surrounded by agricultural land, set in a quiet valley, albeit a few minutes from the centre of Newport.


“The 1850 vicarage is in typical Isle of Wight Victorian style, with great proportions, decorative bargeboards, original two-bay stable and carriage store. A large room above the stables makes a great studio/office space for my interior design business, which is also relocating with me. The fact that


the house had never been made-over really appealed. Firstly, as an interior designer, I was on the look out for a project and secondly many period fittings, such as servants bells etc, were still intact. During the renovations we even found a wood panel adjacent to a doorway marked in pencil, with the names of the original family’s children and their heights, dating back to 1870. Naturally, I’ve added my height and the date I moved in just to keep the history going.
