| EDITOR’S NOTE |
Welcome to our Summer 2018 Issue! We participated in several industry events during the Spring, and we enjoyed speaking with many of you about your businesses and your latest products. You’ll find several features in this issue that are a direct result of conversations at these events. In our ILE Advisor, industry veteran Larry Dunville outlines the challenges around standards for inspection of electric overhead traveling (EOT) cranes. In short, there a many potentially applicable standards, and it’s not at all clear which
rules rule. Tis lack of clarity exposes crane owners to a great deal of potentially liability, and this important piece plots a way forward for a safer workplace that addresses risk. Tis article is derived from a presentation given by Mr. Dunville at the Crane
Manufacturers Association of America’s (CMAA) Overhead Crane Safety Conference. Tis new one-day event held during MODEX 2018 drew about 85 participants and delivered a lot of material that could be taken away and applied immediately. Based on the lively Q&A sessions behind each presentation and wrapping up the day, delegates were strongly engaged by the program. On the floor at MODEX, there was a vast range new technology on display. Among many of the exhibitors we visited, Gorbel CEO Brian Reh led us through a demo of their CraneBrain 3D software. Given a set of parameters, this tool builds a 3D image of a crane system on-the-fly (and does a lot of math behind the scenes!) We wanted to learn more about this remarkable tool and the business behind it, and we share what we found in our Cover Feature. It’s a remarkable story about an evolving focus on dependability, speed and technology. We also attended AISTech 2018, the Iron and Steel Technology Conference and
Exposition which featured a number of crane industry exhibitors. Our Guest Blogger, Camron Ghanemi, shares his thoughts on that event and the current state of the steel industry. Be sure to read that, and let us know if you have thoughts to share about these events or others you’ve attended. We are very grateful for the welcome and support we have received for this publication from many of you. If you are working on something that you would like to share with the North American overhead crane marketplace, Industrial Lifting Exchange is here to serve you! We are always interested in learning about your latest products and your business – or issues affecting the industry.
