LIFELINE ADELAIDE SAVES LIVES “ I’d started thinking about suicide a lot.
I was studying at uni and feeling a lot of pressure coming up to exams. I started having panic attacks before lectures and eventually stopped going to classes.
I realise now that I was depressed and very anxious. I was too ashamed to talk about it. I didn’t think anyone would understand and I thought I’d be a burden if I went on about it. I felt so alone. One night, I came really close. I thought about calling Lifeline Adelaide, but was worried that my flatmates might overhear. When I was looking at the Lifeline website, I found out that they had an Online Chat Service.
I was so nervous at first and didn’t know where to start. But the more I wrote, the more comfortable I became. It felt so much simpler than having to say it all out loud. Having someone just listen and try to understand was a huge comfort. That experience encouraged me to go and talk to someone face-to-face. Lifeline Adelaide referred me to some other services which gave me support as well as coping strategies. It made me see that I actually had a lot more inner strength than I’d thought. I’d been coping with a lot on my own.
