MENTAL HEALTH AWARE

6 hours.

This is a blended training model comprising 2 hours e-learning and 4 hours face-to-face session with a qualified Lifeline trainer

About: In the workplace, employees will likely encounter customers who may be experiencing mental illness and not knowing how to respond can cause considerable stress. This awareness training is designed to enable participants to ‘recognise, respond, and refer’ when working with someone who has a mental illness. Participants learn to recognise and respond appropriately to common mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, substance use disorder and psychosis. A module on self-care is included to ensure that participants take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to: • recognise, respond and refer when working with someone who has a mental health issue and check their safety • recognise common mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, substance use disorder and psychosis • develop an understanding of crisis situations, including suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury and panic attacks • appropriately respond and support individuals experiencing a mental health crisis • provide useful supports and referrals • develop own self-care strategies and building personal resilience.

Who should attend? MHFA offers valuable skills to everyone and requires no formal training or experience in mental health. Suitable for both managers and employees. 18+ years. TESTIMONIALS

“Last year I arranged for a group of 12 SA Redbacks players to do a half day Lifeline SAFE Talk course. Some players were initially hesitant about participating, but the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Our players felt far more aware of signs and more comfortable in having conversations with others who may be having trouble coping with difficulties in life.” South Australian Cricket Association (SACA)

“Despite practicing for 16 years as a professional psychologist, I found the course boosted my confidence and enhanced my skills in connecting with and supporting people at risk of suicide.” ASIST participant

“I use ASIST in virtually every crisis situation, in both my roles as a volunteer and employee… Thank you for this life-changing program.” ASIST participant

“An excellent first step in providing assistance to someone at risk.” safeTALK participant 8
