The technology shaping the future workforce

By Chris Proctor, CEO Oneserve

The modern workforce has evolved significantly over the last few decades, and this evolution shows no sign of slowing down, with technology driving the pace at lightening speed across almost every single industry, for the better. However, some companies aren’t fully aware of just how much technology can do to help them achieve their business goals; creating a better service and avoiding haemorrhaging money unnecessarily. Companies like Deliveroo are already leading the way in this new wave of working, as are several oil and gas giants, showing that decentralising and connecting your workforce while joining fo r c e s

with competitors can ensure the business remains at the top of its game.

Decentralised workforce

Big players like Deliveroo have transformed the way that we, as consumers, see how goods are delivered in the consumer sphere; fundamentally increasing our expectations for delivery and customer service. However, in the B2B industrial market, how can we see this develop and permeate? One of the biggest shocks in 2018 was the collapse of Carillion and the significant impact it had on contractors. Given the giant’s fall, it’s unsurprising that there’s now a negative perception about the future of monolithic supplier contracting in its traditional guise.

The answer to this reoccurring problem

is to create a decentralised workforce that ensures work gets done efficiently, and all contractors are paid on time. Looking at the Deliveroo and Uber business model, each person bids on a job that is sent to a wider database based on their location, expertise and equipment. This has been proven to work exceptionally well for both their workers and customers. Indeed, within Field Service Management specifically, Gartner predict that by 2020 over 40% of Field Service work, including facilities management, will be conducted by individuals not employed by the organisation. The oil and gas industry are leading the way with this practice in the B2B sphere. Akin to
