but now I realize the days of summer are be- ginning to already shorten. What happened to spring? Already we are in June with two lobster boat races down and the July paper heading to press and the grounds around my house out of hand. The list of things needing to be done is long and time is the enemy. My problem is fi guring out which is a priority, when often times I put what I enjoy doing in its place. One of my problems has been agreeing

to do things for a number of causes, but I am learning to say no. If you are a volunteer you understand some of the issues that come with it. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of serving a number of causes, but soon I am going to begin to draw a line as to where my time will be going. Some worry that if they gave up their position, who would do it and times no one will step up and even though it might be a worthy cause, the end has come. With Generation Zero out there I am sure a lot of good organizations will die a horrible death. I especially worry about historical societies and museums. Hopefully my concern is not found true. Talking about history, I know all the

work I do documenting vessels and marine events has value, but it proved itself with a stop at the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society when they asked about two ship- wrecks: the four-masted schooner EDWIN R. HUNT and the two-masted schooner BRAVE. In regard to EDWIN R. HUNT I had

two accounts of disasters one in 1903 and one in 1906. In 1906, she left Boston, un- der the command of Capt. B. C. Sargent of Sargentville, for Cape Breton in ballast to load gypsum on August 22, however, she

never reported. They had hoped she had been blown out to sea, but that was not the case and she was lost without a trace. I then searched for BRAVE, but could

not fi gure out which BRAVE was the one in question. Fortunately, in this case they had given me the name of her master, Capt. Joseph Lane. I searched the gravestones from Deer Isle and the third one I looked at in Greenwood Cemetery was for Capt. Lane, which said right on the stone, died 4 May 1893, ‘lost on the schooner BRAVE.’ So it was to the newspaper accounts and in the 11 May issue of the Republican Journal there was the loss of the 17 year old schooner BRAVE of Deer Isle, lost off Newburyport (Plum Island) with all hands. The crew of the life-saving station saw the schooner was going to come ashore and found volunteers, gathered the needed equipment and shot a line over the vessel. The vessel signaled the line was on board and those on shore tied a larger line with the hopes of bringing the crew ashore. Unfortunately, a huge wave swept over the vessel and the crew lost their grip and with it went all hope. A few moments later, the mast gave way and the vessel began going to pieces. The four men in the rigging were gone, all natives of Deer Isle. The cargo consisted of rough granite from the J. L. Goss quarry and was valued at $400 and was consigned to Aus- tin Ford of Boston. She was owned by Mr. Greenlaw and was valued at $3,000, with no insurance. A sad sideline to this story is one of the crewmen, David Stinson, had been on the dock awaiting the steamer to go to Boston. Instead, he decided to ship on the schooner, thus saving the fare and making a little money for himself. A few hours later he was lost with the other crew members.
