D. E. L. A. - F  D Commercial Fishing News

From the Director - This is offi cially the last day of halibut

season. The report that I have been hearing is that they are not as plentiful as usual. I saw some great pictures of the fi sh that were caught, much like the one that my Dad used to measure my height with when I was a little girl. Here’s hoping that the shortened season wasn’t too much of a hardship for everyone if it means that we are saving a resource once again.

The inshore lobster fi shery is starting up

once again. At this point in time, the catch is slow and the bait is high. I have posted the herring quota on our Facebook site, but for now, the quota has not changed. It is 55,000 metric ton this year, with it being cut next year to 28.6 thousand metric ton. This is quite a drastic cut! We may want to lower the amount of bait that we are using and think about an extender that will stay on for a longer time, such as Bruneaux Bait, which

is totally biodegradable and passes the DMR standards for being a healthy bait alternative. Mike, Jim Black and I tested this bait when it was in the developmental stage, and found it to be very eff ective as a supplement along with herring or whatever bait you use, such as porgies, red fi sh, etc. We lost a very special man, Wayne

“Butch” Ciomei, of Stonington. When his vessel didn’t come in at his regular time, it was discovered that he went over with the rope and lost his life. We would like to off er our sincere condolences to his family during this time of loss. Butch was a long standing member of D.E.L.A. and always sent his membership in faithfully. Thank you to the Ciomei Family for your continued support. With this being said, we want to continue to speak for our members when issues arise in our lobster industry. We are proud to represent members like Butch, who was a very well respected man who set his example

of passing his knowledge down to his next generations. I would like to share with you, when

Mike and I built our boat, SAVING GRACE, she was built with safety in mind. She is a tribute to all of the people that have helped us along the way, as we have had some major engine problems. She is also a wonderful tribute to fi shermen such as Butch and hope that she can uphold his legacy and help to save lives in the future. We have a custom built rope locker that

holds 2,000 feet of rope that goes under the platform directly under the hauler. It is 4 feet long and eliminates rope around your feet as you work and set your gear. For any water that comes in, it has a macerator pump for easy clean-up. There is no standing water in the rope locker. This was designed so the rope will come out without any snarls. We have hand rails that are mounted on the bulkhead, in case you need to grab some- thing quick and a rope ladder that is hooked to a cleat for getting back into the boat in case you do fall overboard. We also plan to put fl ame retardant paint in the engine hold, as fi re is a big fear of all of us. She is also equipped with Stormy Seas vests, which can be worn comfortably with a CO2 cartridge that can be deployed if you need fl otation. SAVING GRACE was built this way, so she can be an icon for safety, much like the neck and head restraint device that was developed for NASCAR after Dale Earnhardt’s pass- ing. If she can help our fi shery in this way, then we have accomplished our goal. A lot of

these features were done with consultation from John McMillan, of McMillan Off shore Survival Training, as Mike and I have both taken his class and fi nd it very valuable for saving your life. We have off ered SAVING GRACE as a help to John with his classes. Thank you to all who have helped us make this possible. Mike and I met with Phil Conklin and

the new crew of Nordic Aquafarms, who started the largest salmon producing nation in the world, Norway, in 2013. The Norwe- gian’s heritage of living close to nature and making a living from sustainable fi sheries is a back-bone to the industry. They are pro- posing placing a salmon project in Belfast, in Little River. They had questions for us as well as answering questions that we have for them. This is an entire new concept, not like the reputation of the salmon farms of the past. We had a very good meeting with them and have information if you’d like to contact us.

D.E.L.A. welcomes new member,

Judge W. Kennedy Boone, III, Ret. of Hag- erstown, Maryland. Every member helps us make a diff erence when it comes to having a stronger voice. Our membership is open for new membership and hope you consider coming aboard! Our next meeting is set for Thursday, July 12th

at Stonecutter’s (for-

merly Fishermen’s Friend) in Stonington. We hope to see you there and bring along a friend!

Have a safe and good season! Sheila
